As a huge Batman fan, I really think The Brave and the Bold needs to do something different from previous movies. I’d love to see them bring Scarecrow in as the main villain, but really lean into his ability to mess with people’s minds, instead of just making him another strong guy Batman has to punch. Scarecrow hasn’t been used to his full potential on film yet, and with Muschietti directing, I think he could be a truly terrifying and memorable villain – exactly what the new DCU needs!

Andy Muschietti Is The Perfect Director To Introduce Scarecrow To The DCU

Following his work on the films It and It: Chapter Two, director Muschietti revisited this world with It: Welcome to Derry on HBO Max. This series is a prequel, set 27 years before the first movie, and explores another period when the town of Derry, Maine, was haunted by Pennywise and his terrifying appearances.

Muschietti directed the first episode and immediately brought back the series’ signature unsettling and strange visuals. He’s skilled at crafting scary scenes that deeply frighten children and make them doubt what’s real.

Andy Muschietti is skilled at building suspense and genuinely frightening scenes, making him an ideal choice to bring the Scarecrow character into the DC Universe. In Batman lore, Scarecrow is a psychologist-turned-villain who created a toxin that forces people to confront their deepest fears.

The Dark Knight films demonstrated Scarecrow’s fear toxin, mainly focusing on how frightening his mask is when people are exposed to it. But the director could build on those scenes, really showing just how terrifying Scarecrow’s toxin actually is.

The DCU Can Continue To Lean Into Batman’s Horror Elements

Even though Matt Reeves’ Batman films have a very dark tone, James Gunn seems to be heading in a similar direction with the new DC Universe. While the DCU will include more fantastical elements, it’s also leaning into the scarier side of Batman’s world, particularly with the planned movie about Clayface.

The upcoming Clayface movie is leaning into body horror, and will be directed by James Watkins, who directed the 2024 film Speak No Evil. While it’s a bit of a risk to make a solo superhero horror film given recent box office trends, it demonstrates that the DC Universe is willing to explore different genres.

Scarecrow is a villain who truly embodies the frightening aspects of Batman’s world, often appearing with chilling imagery, as seen in the Batman: Arkham Asylum game. Director Andy Muschietti excels at horror, and featuring Scarecrow in The Brave and the Bold would give him the opportunity to bring his distinctive style to this iconic Batman foe.
