Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her role in Gossip Girl, died on February 26, 2025, at the age of 39. A year later, her Buffy co-star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, remembered her with a heartfelt tribute.
Michelle Trachtenberg joined the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in Season 5 as Dawn Summers, and this wasn’t the first time she and Sarah Michelle Gellar had worked together. They had previously appeared on All My Children, and Gellar fondly remembered the many years of experiences they shared in a heartfelt post.
Gellar started her post by saying, “I’m…” and shared a series of photos spanning the years she and Trachtenberg have known each other. The pictures include moments from Buffy, promotional shoots, a still of Trachtenberg from All My Children, and a sweet photo of Trachtenberg holding Gellar’s baby.
I feel so fortunate to have over 30 years of wonderful memories with you. I remember when we first started working together, and it wasn’t long before you actually grew taller than me!
I first got to know him on All My Children. I saw how he became a star playing Harriet, and he was always wonderful with my children. He came to so many of their birthday parties, even though I’m sure he had more exciting things to do!
She finished her message by saying that whenever she thought of him, she remembered his incredible smile – the one that lit up his whole face and made everyone around him happy. Although he was taken too soon, she promised they would all keep his memory alive.
Gellar included a poignant quote from a popular fantasy show: “Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you.”
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Will Honor Michelle Trachtenberg
A reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was officially announced in early 2025 after years of discussion. The new series, called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar, though she’s currently the only original cast member confirmed to return.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan have confirmed they’ll reunite for a project expected to arrive around 2027. Hannigan said they’ll participate in whatever feels right for the situation, and Gellar expressed confidence that the project will be handled respectfully and with care.
The original characters Buffy, Dawn, Willow, and Xander all lived through the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Though it’s unknown if Michelle Hannigan will be involved, the upcoming revival will introduce a new Slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The series will be directed by Chloé Zhao, who also directed Hamnet, and written and produced by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman.
