The thriller Premonition, starring Sandra Bullock, is currently gaining popularity on Netflix. Released in 2007, the movie features Bullock as a woman desperately trying to save her husband (Julian McMahon) from a tragic fate. The film’s non-linear storytelling adds to the suspense, and the cast also includes Nia Long, known from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Amber Valletta from Hitch, and Peter Stormare, who will appear in the upcoming Until Dawn.
According to Netflix’s daily list of the top 10 movies in the U.S., Premonition has climbed to number 10. It joins other popular Netflix titles like Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers (at number 1), A House of Dynamite (number 2), KPop Demon Hunters (number 3), The Perfect Neighbor (number 7), and Ballad of a Small Player (number 9) on the chart.
The recent chart success of the Sandra Bullock movie is likely due to the popularity of Halloween on October 31st. Several other Halloween-themed and spooky films also made the chart, including Goosebumps 2 (No. 4), Hotel Transylvania 3 (No. 5), Hubie Halloween (No. 6), and Casper (No. 8).
Despite not being a new release on Netflix in the US – which often helps shows gain popularity – Premonition has still managed to succeed.
Okay, so Premonition is doing surprisingly well on Netflix right now, which is kind of weird because it’s a genuinely suspenseful thriller. Most of the other movies everyone’s watching for Halloween are these light, funny horror-comedies geared towards families. But I’ve been thinking about why Premonition is suddenly popular again after all this time, and there are a few things that probably explain it.
When it was first released, Premonition was a commercial success. It earned $84.1 million despite only costing $20 million to make, performing better than several other popular movies from 2007, like Hot Fuzz ($80.6 million), Rob Zombie’s Halloween ($80.5 million), There Will Be Blood ($76.2 million), and 30 Days of Night ($75.5 million). Plus, Netflix is well-known for streaming strong horror-thrillers starring Sandra Bullock.
She starred in the 2018 post-apocalyptic film Bird Box, which was once Netflix’s most popular movie ever, attracting 157.4 million viewers. While still incredibly popular, it has since been surpassed by other films like The Adam Project (157.6 million), Don’t Look Up (171.4 million), Carry-On (172.1 million), Red Notice (230.9 million), and KPop Demon Hunters (325.1 million).
Sandra Bullock remains a popular attraction for the streaming service, consistently bringing in viewers even for older movies and titles not produced by the platform itself.
