Sam Raimi’s new horror film, Send Help, marks a return to his roots and is sure to please longtime fans. After 25 years, Raimi has directed a movie that’s been given an R rating – a departure from the PG-13 ratings of his recent films like Drag Me To Hell and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the new survival horror film Send Help, which stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, has received an R rating due to its strong violence and language. This marks Sam Raimi’s first R-rated movie since the 2000 supernatural thriller The Gift, featuring Cate Blanchett and Hilary Swank. Since then, Raimi has primarily worked on films for broader audiences, including Spider-Man and Oz the Great and Powerful.
The movie Send Help features O’Brien and McAdams, with supporting roles played by Xavier Samuel, Dennis Haysbert, Chris Pang, Emma Raimi, and Edyll Ismail. The script was written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, known for their work on horror films like Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 Friday the 13th remake, as well as the 2017 Baywatch movie. Here’s what the survival thriller is about:
“Send Help” is a suspenseful thriller where two coworkers find themselves stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. They’re the only ones who survived, and now they have to put aside their differences and work together to stay alive. But as they struggle to escape, it becomes a test of who can outsmart and outlast the other.
Sam Raimi Returns to His Horror Roots With ‘Send Help’
Sam Raimi recently told Empire Magazine that he might be embracing a more playful, even slightly chaotic, approach to directing again. Early in his career, he became known as a bold horror director by putting his character Ash through incredibly difficult and physically demanding situations in the Evil Dead films.
The director jokingly admits he pushed things far during filming of Send Help, recounting instances of throwing things—like water and even simulated vomit and blood—at the actors. He even playfully confessed to poking an actress with a stick. For those questioning his commitment to realism, he previously used actual insects during the filming of Drag Me To Hell, with behind-the-scenes footage showing actress Alison Lohman covered in hundreds of bugs for a key scene.

Let me tell you, working with Sam Raimi is… an experience. Apparently, if you see something heading your way on set, brace yourself! Rachel McAdams and I were chatting about a particularly memorable moment – or rather, a messy one. I joked about getting ‘decorated’ with what turned out to be mango puree, cleverly disguised as berries. But it wasn’t a one-off! Rachel confirmed Raimi insists on personally handling the ‘gunk-throwing’ duties. I initially thought he was pulling my leg when he doused me with a bucket of water for the plane crash sequence, but no – he’s completely dedicated. He actually practices those moments! He really, really rehearses them. It’s wild, but you gotta admire the commitment.
