Sam Raimi’s latest is winning over audiences.
Sam Raimi is widely recognized for directing the popular Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire, but he first made a name for himself in the horror genre with the Evil Dead series. Recently, he returned to horror with a new thriller, featuring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, and earning an R rating.
I’m really excited to see that Sam Raimi’s Send Help is absolutely killing it right now – it’s currently number one on the Apple TV store charts here in the US! It’s even beating out big titles like James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, as well as The Housemaid, GOAT, and Shelter to claim that top spot. Pretty impressive!
The horror thriller Send Help is doing well on demand before it becomes available on Hulu. While it’s a 20th Century Studios film and will stream on Hulu eventually, a specific release date hasn’t been announced.
The movie stars Rachel McAdams and Ryan O’Brien as two coworkers – an employee and her difficult boss – who must team up to survive after a plane crash leaves them stranded on a deserted island. Edyll Ismael, Dennis Haysbert, Chris Pang, and Xavier Samuel also appear in the film, which was written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.
The popularity of ‘Send Help’ on the Apple TV store comes after a successful release in cinemas earlier this year. The film, directed by Raimi, earned $93 million globally – $64 million in the US and $29 million internationally – after its January 30th debut.
Critics loved the movie, giving it a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences agree, with an 87% score on the site’s Popcornmeter.
Todd Gilchrist’s review of Send Help for ScreenRant gave the film a very positive score of nine out of ten. Gilchrist specifically highlighted the film’s shocking and graphic scenes, as well as director Sam Raimi’s skill in weaving emotional depth into the story, noting that…
The film is full of genuine emotion, and Raimi has become even better at creating heartfelt moments. However, his main focus is still on directing exciting, violent, and funny action scenes. The camera work perfectly complements the actors’ energetic performances. McAdams and O’Brien deliver incredibly uninhibited performances, pushing their characters further than we’ve seen before, and Raimi doesn’t shy away from showing every graphic detail with obvious enthusiasm for their commitment.
With Send Help, Sam Raimi directs again after 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Rachel McAdams, who also appeared in Doctor Strange, recently received positive reviews for 2023’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Meanwhile, O’Brien has been working on several upcoming projects, including Anniversary and Twinless (both releasing in 2025), and Caddo Lake (2024).
It’s still unknown exactly when “Send Help” will be available on Hulu, but the movie is expected to be a big hit for the streaming service. While it’s unclear what director Sam Raimi will work on next, this film proves he’s one of the best in the business at creating darkly funny horror.
