Sam Mendes’ Beatles Films Cast Key Roles

Sam Mendes’ upcoming film has added four new actors to its cast, portraying key figures from the Beatles’ story. Morfydd Clark will portray John Lennon’s first wife, Cynthia Lennon. Farhan Akhtar will play the role of Indian composer Ravi Shankar. Lucy Boynton will play Jane Asher, who was an actress and Paul McCartney’s girlfriend. Rounding out the additions, Harry Lawtey will play Stuart Sutcliffe, the Beatles’ original bass guitarist.

The film will feature Paul Mescal playing Paul McCartney, Harrison Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Each movie will focus on the band’s story as seen through the eyes of one of its members.

This new casting is important because the characters are based on people who knew The Beatles when they were first starting out. John Lennon met Cynthia Powell while they were both students at the Liverpool College of Art. They married in 1962 after their son, Julian, was conceived. Their marriage lasted until John became involved with Yoko Ono in the London art world. He left Cynthia in 1968, and they divorced shortly after.

This period of time overlaps with Paul McCartney’s relationship with Jane Asher. They began dating in 1963, and their romance influenced many Beatles songs, including “And I Love Her,” “We Can Work It Out,” “You Won’t See Me,” “I’m Looking Through You,” “What You’re Doing,” “Things We Said Today,” and “For No One.” Although engaged, they broke up in 1968, allegedly because Asher found McCartney with American screenwriter Francie Schwartz, with whom he then started a new relationship.

Stuart Sutcliffe is sometimes called the “Fifth Beatle.” He was a fellow art student in Liverpool with John Lennon and was an early member of the band before deciding to focus on painting. Sutcliffe and Lennon both loved Buddy Holly’s band, The Crickets, and were keen on band names that had a clever double meaning, which inspired them to come up with the name “The Beatles.”

Ravi Shankar was a highly skilled sitar player famous all over the world. He and George Harrison became friends after Harrison discovered Shankar’s music and was inspired by it. Harrison then began using Indian instruments in The Beatles’ songs, which helped bring those sounds into mainstream music and culture.

The film features Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd, and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey. James Norton will portray the Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, and…

As a huge Beatles fan, I’m so excited to hear that all four of their movies are coming back to theaters in April 2028! It’s going to be an amazing experience to see them on the big screen again.
