Sam And Dean’s Supernatural Reunion Should Only Happen On One Condition

After Supernatural concluded in 2020, its devoted fans remained incredibly enthusiastic about Sam and Dean Winchester’s story. Naturally, discussions about a possible continuation have been ongoing for the last five years, and now those talks are becoming reality.

Even though Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have started new projects, a return to Supernatural seems increasingly likely. The cancellation of the spin-off The Winchesters has opened the door for a potential revival. Ackles has expressed interest in continuing the story, stating in mid-2025 that he doesn’t rule out returning to the world of Supernatural. Padalecki agrees, saying in 2024 he’s confident he’ll reprise his role as Sam Winchester again.

Okay, so it’s looking really likely that Supernatural is coming back, which is exciting! But honestly, as a huge fan, I think a revival should only happen if it’s done right – there’s one specific thing that has to be true for it to work, in my opinion.

Supernatural’s Finale Suffered From A Lack Of Familiar Faces

A major issue with the ending of Supernatural was the limited number of characters involved in the final conflict. This was largely due to filming restrictions caused by the pandemic in 2020. As a result, the ultimate battle came down to just Dean, Sam, and Jack facing off against God, with a brief appearance by Bobby Singer afterward.

It was disappointing that the finale didn’t fully capture the show’s spirit. While Sam and Dean were the central characters of Supernatural, the story always emphasized the connections they made with others. The bond between the brothers was key, but their relationships with family, friends, and even past enemies were equally important. Fans expected the final episode to celebrate these connections by bringing back many familiar characters, but that didn’t quite happen.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. According to showrunner Andrew Dabb, the original plan for the end of Supernatural, before the pandemic hit, involved a big reunion of characters at a rebuilt Roadhouse in the afterlife.

Supernatural Should Only Return With A Full-Cast Finale (Not Just Sam & Dean)

While Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are the faces of Supernatural, a revival would only succeed if it featured the whole team – something the original finale didn’t fully achieve. A good continuation could revisit ideas like the Roadhouse, or introduce a new villain in a potential season 16 that requires Sam and Dean to reunite with all their past allies.

It’s unrealistic to expect every actor to participate in a revival. Some simply won’t be able to fit filming into their schedules. However, as long as the revival can include most of Sam and Dean’s important friends and allies from the original series, bringing the show back would be a good thing. If the revival only focuses on characters like Bobby Singer, it raises the question of whether it’s offering anything new beyond what the original finale already provided.

If they ever bring Supernatural back, there are so many characters they have to include! First off, Misha Collins as Castiel was seriously shortchanged in the original finale, so he absolutely needs to return. And they owe it to the fans to bring back the characters from The Wayward Sisters – it’s the least they can do after the spinoff didn’t happen. I’d love to see Rowena again, still running Hell, and some version of Charlie, played by Felicia Day. Plus, Lisa and Ben deserve a proper ending, and it would be amazing to see Garth the Werewolf, Sam’s partner Eileen, and even Max, to show the next generation of hunters. It just wouldn’t feel right without them!

Given how easily characters return from the dead on Supernatural, there’s a long list of possibilities. Of course, bringing back Bobby Singer would be great, and many fans would love to see the Winchesters’ parents, John and Mary, reappear. Beyond them, other characters who could return include Crowley, Meg, Gabriel, the Roadhouse crew, Frank Devereaux (who briefly filled Bobby’s role), Benny (who might not be gone for good), Rufus, and Kevin Tran.

Not all of those characters will likely appear in the final Supernatural episode, but the sheer number of possibilities shows how strong the cast of characters could be if the show were ever revived.
