Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary is a new film based on the popular novel by Andy Weir—the author of The Martian. Starring Ryan Gosling as a solitary astronaut, the movie follows his mission to save Earth. The cast also includes Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. The film is distributed by Amazon MGM.

This makes it his longest movie yet, surpassing Blade Runner 2049 (2 hours and 43 minutes), which also starred Harrison Ford. Many consider Project Hail Mary to be one of Gosling’s best films.
Okay, so The Martian is a bit of a long haul at over two and a half hours, but honestly, I think it earned that length. It was nominated for seven Oscars, and it makes sense – director Ridley Scott really built a detailed, immersive sci-fi world. We’ve seen audiences happily sit through even longer movies like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Oppenheimer recently, but a longer runtime only works if the movie really grabs you from the start, you know?
Ryan Gosling’s most recent film released in theaters was The Fall Guy (2024), which unfortunately didn’t perform well, likely because of its high $140 million production cost. Prior to that, he starred in the hugely successful Barbie, which earned $1.4 billion globally. Barbie‘s appeal was quite different from science fiction films like Project Hail Mary or The Martian.
According to Variety, the movie Project Hail Mary cost $150 million to make, which presents a similar financial challenge as The Fall Guy. Generally, a film needs to earn 2.5 times its production cost to become profitable, meaning Project Hail Mary is aiming for around $400 million in box office revenue. While this is achievable – The Martian earned $630 million a decade ago – it will still be a significant goal.
Ryan Gosling is also set to appear in the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter, scheduled for release in May 2027. With several new movies on the horizon, we’ll soon see how much of a draw he is at the box office. Project Hail Mary is rated PG-13, making it accessible to a wider audience, though its release is still quite a ways off.
