Ryan Gosling’s role in Star Wars: Starfighter is a first for both him and the Star Wars universe. It’s the first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker, set after the Battle of Exegol, and marks Gosling’s debut in a major blockbuster franchise like Star Wars. Interestingly, it’s also the first time Tom Cruise has directed a Star Wars movie, a fact Gosling apparently didn’t realize while starring in the film, which was directed by Shawn Levy.
Tom Cruise unexpectedly visited the set of Star Wars: Starfighter in November, landing his helicopter right in the middle of filming and temporarily halting production. Director Levy shared that Cruise initially just wanted to observe, but Levy playfully challenged him to get involved. Cruise enthusiastically accepted and ended up operating the camera during a lightsaber fight scene in a muddy pond with new cast member Flynn Gray. Ryan Gosling unfortunately wasn’t there to see it, and was reportedly very disappointed he missed the surprise.
