The X-Files was a huge hit in the 1990s, and its success led to two later seasons. Now, over thirty years after it first aired, Ryan Coogler, the director of Sinners, is planning a new version of the show.
News of the show first came out in March 2023, but it hasn’t been released yet. Given his previous successful projects, Ryan Coogler is well-equipped to handle it, and his commitment to the reboot is encouraging. He recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s still in the process of writing the series.
I’m really immersed in my work right now, and today is going well,” the filmmaker said, referring to his morning writing session. “It hasn’t always been this way; there have been many days when I struggled.
Ryan Coogler shared that he’s currently working on The X-Files, but his next film will be Black Panther 3. He described the planned reboot as a passion project, explaining he grew up watching the original series with his mother and was a devoted fan. He’s still in the process of writing the script.
He confessed that he sometimes wished he could just have a day to work on the draft without feeling stressed about finishing it.
Ryan Coogler shared that he received guidance from Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, who began his career as a producer on The X-Files. Coogler said Gilligan spent a couple of hours on a Zoom call answering his questions, and he still refers to the notes he took.
Ryan Coogler shared that when he isn’t working on a script for The X-Files, he enjoys watching Gilligan’s latest popular show, Pluribus.
Beyond its fresh take on paranormal stories and sci-fi mysteries, The X-Files became popular thanks to its stars, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, who played Scully and Mulder. It’s currently unknown if any of the main actors will reprise their roles, but Anderson recently shared some positive news.
Chris Carter developed the original series, featuring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. The show also starred Robert Patrick, Annabeth Gish, and Mitch Pileggi, who played Walter Skinner, the direct supervisor of the main characters, Mulder and Scully. Reports indicate Carter is not participating in the upcoming revival.
