Doctor Who won’t be back on TV until 2026, but a new episode is planned for Christmas of next year. For now, the BBC will be making the show by itself, as Disney is no longer co-producing it.
Fans have something to be excited about: new episodes of Who are on the way, plus a spin-off series called The War Between the Land and the Sea will arrive next year. However, I’m a little concerned about the show’s Christmas special after hearing what executive producer Russell T. Davies recently told Radio Times.
How Far Along Russell T. Davies Is With The 2026 Doctor Who Christmas Special
The upcoming 2026 Christmas special of Doctor Who needs to explain a big mystery: why The Doctor now looks like Rose Tyler. Actress Billie Piper has avoided directly confirming if she’s playing The Doctor, suggesting her role might be more complex than it initially appeared.
With the show’s premiere still almost a year away, Russell T. Davies was asked how far along the writing process was. Here’s an update on the script’s progress, as of today.
I’m tied up right now with a project called “The War Between the Land and the Sea” and filming a show in Manchester. I’ll be free to start working on it next year, but I’ve already planned out the whole story, so we’re good to go!
The person in charge of Doctor Who is sure they can finish a script and have an episode prepared by next Christmas, which is good to hear. I believe they’ll deliver. However, I’m not convinced the episode will address all the important questions fans have about the Doctor’s latest change, and I think they might be underestimating how difficult that will be.
Why I Can’t Help But Worry After Russell T. Davies’ Response
It’s safe to say Doctor Who is at a turning point. The recent, surprising decision by Russell T. Davies might be because the show had already done something similar with the Doctor splitting into two versions after a regeneration.
Ncuti Gatwa’s time as the Doctor on ‘Doctor Who’ was groundbreaking for LGBTQ+ representation, but a significant plot point feels unresolved and frustrating.
The show is trying bold new strategies to attract a wider audience, but these changes have left longtime viewers with a lot of unanswered questions. If these plot twists aren’t executed well, the show could end up losing more fans than it gains.
Casting Billie Piper again is fantastic – fans who loved her in classic episodes will definitely be excited to see what she does with this new part. It’s a great way to attract viewers who haven’t watched in a while and hopefully win them over for the entire season.
As a fan, I’d feel much better knowing Russell T. Davies has a complete, high-quality script, not just initial ideas. It’s a big ask, but he was brought back to revitalize the show, and he’s done a good job so far. Now, with the Disney deal falling through and the associated funding lost, the BBC really needs his strong storytelling to maintain viewership.
It remains to be seen how he handles the role, especially since Doctor Who is currently off the air and won’t begin filming its 2026 Christmas special until sometime next year. Fans can enjoy recent episodes now by subscribing to Disney+.
