Despite a long and successful career with almost 80 film roles, Russell Crowe has only appeared in two true Westerns. The first was in 1995’s The Quick and the Dead, where he played a compelling and dangerous villain, stealing every scene. He brought a captivating charisma that was both alluring and intimidating. Twelve years later, he showcased those same qualities in a remake of a classic 1950s Western, a film that unfortunately didn’t receive the attention it deserved.
Directed with a fast pace by James Mangold, Russell Crowe and Christian Bale starred in a fantastic reimagining of the 1957 western classic, 3:10 to Yuma. The film is based on a story by the celebrated author Elmore Leonard. Though the original movie is good, this remake is more complete and detailed, with more intense gunfights and even stronger performances from the entire cast. With its 20th anniversary approaching, it’s time to revisit 3:10 to Yuma!
‘3:10 to Yuma’ Leaves the 1957 Original in the Dust

Lionsgate
The film 3:10 to Yuma is a popular and well-regarded remake of a 1957 western, and it’s based on a short story by Elmore Leonard. The story takes place in 1884 and centers on Dan Evans (Christian Bale), a struggling rancher, his wife Alice (Gretchen Mol), and their son William (Logan Lerman). Facing financial hardship because of a drought, Dan takes a risky job: transporting the dangerous outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his gang to the 3:10 train in Contention, Arizona.
Dan is a good man who will do anything to defend his family, and that leads to a dangerous confrontation with Ben and his ruthless crew while they’re on the road. While the first film was beautifully shot and featured excellent acting from Van Heflin and Glenn Ford, this new version is longer – by half an hour – giving the characters more depth. However, it also includes a lot more intense and graphic violence than the original.
Although the 2007 film 3:10 to Yuma was arguably better than many others, it didn’t receive as much attention, likely because Ridley Scott’s American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington, came out shortly after and was a much bigger hit. American Gangster earned $269 million worldwide, almost four times the $70 million grossed by 3:10 to Yuma. However, even after almost 20 years, 3:10 to Yuma remains a well-regarded and enduring film.
‘3:10 to Yuma’ Holds Strong Nearly 20 Years Later

Lionsgate
Even with the fantastic performances from Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, 3:10 to Yuma remains a strong film thanks to James Mangold’s sharp direction and a wonderful supporting cast. Veteran actor Peter Fonda (Once Upon a Time in the West) delivers a surprisingly moving performance as an aging bounty hunter, adding emotional depth to the relationship between the characters Dan and William.
Ben Foster delivers a standout and chilling performance as Charlie Prince, the dangerously unstable right-hand man, adding to the already strong work from Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. The film also boasts excellent performances from Alan Tudyk, Luke Wilson, Vinessa Shaw, Kevin Durand, and Dallas Roberts, making 3:10 to Yuma a truly impressive showcase of acting talent that viewers shouldn’t miss.
With a strong 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 3:10 to Yuma continues to resonate with audiences thanks to its foundation in Elmore Leonard’s writing. At its heart, the film tells a relatable story about a father and son. The protective bond between Dan and William unfolds in surprising ways, leading to a bittersweet conclusion filled with earned pride. Beneath the action and suspense, the film delivers a powerful emotional core, making it a memorable and rewatchable experience.
