Russell Crowe is still widely recognized for his early roles, especially his performance in the 2000 epic, Gladiator. He’s also starred in other highly praised films like L.A. Confidential (1997) and A Beautiful Mind (2001). More recently, Crowe has taken on diverse roles, including playing a villain in Unhinged (2020) and battling supernatural forces in films like The Pope’s Exorcist (2023) and The Exorcism (2024). He’s recently returned to action thrillers with Land of Bad (2024) and also appeared in a popular World War II thriller.
The movie, which was released in theaters last year, is now available for streaming and gaining popularity online. Currently, it’s the ninth most-watched film on Rakuten, a streaming service.
The movie Nuremberg is finding success on streaming platforms after doing well in theaters last year. Directed by James Vanderbilt, the World War II film earned over $70 million globally despite having a production budget of around $10 million.
I’m really fascinated by the new series, Nuremberg. It focuses on the trials of the Nazi leaders after the war, and it’s told through the eyes of a psychiatrist named Douglas Kelley, played by Rami Malek. What’s especially compelling is the complex relationship he develops with Hermann Göring, portrayed by Russell Crowe. The cast is incredible too – you’ve got Michael Shannon, Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Richard E. Grant, and even Colin Hanks all involved, so I’m expecting a lot from it!
The movie Nuremberg wasn’t just a box office success; critics generally liked it too. It has a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and audiences loved it even more, giving it a 95% score. Many reviews highlighted Russell Crowe’s performance, and praised the film’s thoughtful, though fairly conventional, take on the Nuremberg trials.
In a review for ScreenRant, Gregory Nussen gave the film Nuremberg a low score of 3 out of 10, disagreeing with many other opinions. Nussen felt that even Russell Crowe’s performance couldn’t overcome the film’s biggest problems: an inconsistent tone and a misguided attempt to make audiences sympathize with Nazi war criminals. According to Nussen’s review:
Vanderbilt clearly portrays Nazism as a deeply damaging force, yet he presents it in a way that feels oddly fascinating. This approach seems intended to create a sense of foreboding. The film claims to be based on real accounts, both from survivors and those who didn’t live through the era, but it’s strange to ask viewers to sympathize with Nazi leaders.
After his role in Nuremberg, Russell Crowe has starred in Beast (2026) and The Get Out (2026), but neither film achieved the same level of success. His next big project, The Weight, featuring Ethan Hawke, is scheduled for release on September 18th. Crowe is also involved in the upcoming remake of Highlander, directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Henry Cavill, though a release date for that film hasn’t been announced yet.
Whether or not “Nuremberg” maintains its popularity on streaming remains to be seen, but Russell Crowe clearly still draws an audience. While some of his recent films haven’t been successful, this World War II movie demonstrates that pairing a talented actor with a compelling story can still resonate with viewers.
