Rumors Swirled About Gwen Stacy Appearing In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, But I’d Much Rather See A Different Love Interest

Is there any new Marvel film more thrilling than “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”? Although I’m looking forward to the upcoming Avengers films, as an ardent Spider-Man fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the release of Tom Holland’s Spidey again on screen following the outstanding performance in “No Way Home” last year. Filming has started this month, and there have been numerous whispers about which iconic characters will make an appearance in the movie. Given the buzz, it seems like a perfect opportunity for me to discuss the romantic interest I’ve long hoped to see featured in a Spider-Man film.

For some time now, there have been numerous speculations circulating about Sadie Sink’s role. On the internet, various theories are being discussed, including possibilities such as Jean Grey, Mayday Parker (Peter Parker’s daughter), or even Gwen Stacy. However, I personally would prefer if she portrayed Black Cat, another well-known character from the comics, who could potentially become Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s love interest… with the exception of MJ, of course.

I’ve Always Wanted To See A Spider-Man And Black Cat Storyline

In my youth, I became a fan of Spider-Man comics, and one character that truly captured my interest, who hasn’t yet appeared in films, is Black Cat/Felicia Hardy. This character made her debut in Marvel Comics in 1979 and has played various roles over the years – as an antagonist (with rumors of a “Brand New Day” shift for Black Cat), love interest, and partner to Spider-Man. Although I’m fully on board with Peter Parker and Zendaya’s MJ being the endgame couple, I’ve always imagined it would be intriguing to see the movies explore the unique relationship dynamics between these characters in a standalone story before reaching the finale.

When considering Spider-Man and Black Cat’s comic book dynamic, it’s clear that their bond is heavily influenced by a powerful attraction and the thrill of two crime fighters crossing paths. In the comics, they share a kiss before revealing their true identities. Peter Parker is admired for his sincere and pure approach to romance. However, I sometimes wonder if Spider-Man might occasionally find himself entangled in Black Cat’s electric allure – although she may represent temptation more than a serious relationship he eventually commits to.

Black Cat Is Much Different From MJ Or Gwen Stacy

In the comic books, Black Cat encounters Spider-Man before Peter Parker does, both masked as their respective vigilante personas. Although they share a common profession, Black Cat is less morally upright than MJ when it comes to fighting crime and often engages in activities like burglary herself. This contrast creates a tumultuous relationship between them, marked by periods of closeness and separation. Yet, the intrigue and excitement that Black Cat brings into Spider-Man’s life adds an exciting element to the comics.

It seems appropriate for Tom Holland’s character to enter into a brief relationship now, as the end of “No Way Home” saw a spell cast where people will remember Spider-Man but not Peter Parker. This situation could lead Peter to fully embrace his hero persona, and a person who supports this aspect of him might further fuel this transformation, somewhat pushing Peter into the background.

I’m Still Bummed The Amazing Spider-Man Film Series Cut Felicia Hardy’s Plotline

Black Cat, a character previously featured in Spider-Man movies on two occasions, nearly made an appearance twice before. Initially, Anne Hathaway had been considered for the part in Sam Raimi’s fourth film, but the project was ultimately abandoned. Furthermore, Felicity Jones portrayed Felicia Hardy, albeit briefly, as Harry Osborn’s executive assistant in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, her character was intended to take on a more significant role in an unrealized third movie of the series.

In simpler terms, through Tom Holland’s films, the character has had the opportunity to work alongside the Avengers, and has achieved feats beyond what previous movies managed. I genuinely look forward to the character getting a new chance (after two previous attempts) – possibly referring to Black Cat.

The Amazing Spider-Man Movies Already Explored Gwen Stacy And Peter Parker Thoroughly

In my humble opinion as a movie buff, revisiting Gwen Stacy once more on the silver screen isn’t necessarily something I’m eager for, given that two major Spider-Man film series have already delved into her character. Granted, if Peter is set to develop a new romantic interest in ‘Brand New Day’, it might be interesting to see how things unfold. Although Sam Raimi’s portrayal of Gwen fell short, I must admit that the dynamic between Peter and Gwen in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ movies was undeniably the highlight of those films for me.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone delivered an incredibly realistic portrayal of a young romance that culminated in the comic book-authentic demise of Gwen Stacy at the hands of the Green Goblin. While this emotional climax is iconic, I prefer not to be overly sentimental about it given Peter’s past struggles with MJ. Given that Gwen was initially depicted as Peter’s first love, her death doesn’t align thematically with what I expect from these new Spider-Man movies. I’m more interested in exploring fresh ground in the storyline instead.

I’m More Interested In Seeing Gwen Stacy Again As Spider-Gwen

While it’s not a complete no, I must admit that I wouldn’t object to a fresh take on Gwen Stacy in live-action format on the silver screen. My preference lies with the Spider-Gwen comic series, featuring an alternate universe character who leads her own rock band and gets bitten by a radioactive spider instead, becoming a superheroine. This narrative has been explored in the Spider-Verse animated movies, and I’d be thrilled if Spider-Gwen were to star in her own solo movie, whether animated or live-action. However, Gwen Stacy’s traditional comic storyline doesn’t particularly excite me.

Regardless of whether Black Cat will discover her long-awaited role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, I’m eager for whatever Marvel Studios has planned for us. There are numerous intriguing characters within the Spidey universe, and I can’t wait to learn that the story is expanding beyond Zendaya’s MJ with Brand New Day. The film is expected to be released in theaters on July 31, 2026!
