Throughout most of 2025, fans haven’t had much new anime or manga to enjoy. Dragon Ball DAIMA finished airing in February after 20 episodes, and only one chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga came out. But things are starting to improve! In January 2026, along with a new video game, two big new projects will be revealed.
I’m so excited to hear about Dragon Ball returning in 2026! It has to be huge. What I really want is for the main story to continue in the manga – we need a proper follow-up to Dragon Ball Super that really signals a fresh start. And for those who don’t follow the manga, a new anime series is a must! There are a few obvious ideas floating around, but honestly, I think the best approach isn’t what most people expect. Plus, a new movie would be incredible – the hype is already insane just from the rumors!
Toyotarou Needs to Return With New Chapters of the Dragon Ball Manga
Following the passing of Akira Toriyama in early 2024, the Dragon Ball Super manga stopped releasing new chapters. The only chapter published since then, Chapter 104, was a special, standalone story created using Toriyama’s existing ideas, making it the last Dragon Ball content he directly shaped. Although the manga artist, Toyotarou, finished the Super Hero Saga, the overall story felt incomplete with several unresolved plot points.
While many fans want Dragon Ball Super to continue immediately with chapter 105 and the Black Frieza Saga, starting fresh is the better option. A new Dragon Ball manga series should be announced in January 2026, serving as a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Super. Since Akira Toriyama’s passing, things won’t be the same, and artist Toyotarou deserves a fresh start to begin his own era of Dragon Ball rather than trying to continue the story he created with Toriyama. This new manga could pick up right after Dragon Ball Super ended, featuring the same characters, Black Frieza as the villain, and familiar elements like Beerus, Whis, and Bulma’s parties. However, since Dragon Ball Super is almost current with the end of DBZ, the new manga could also retell the story of the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament and then move the timeline forward from there.
30 Years Later, It’s Time to Remake the Dragon Ball GT Anime
Fans are eagerly awaiting a second season of Dragon Ball Super, hoping it will cover the Galactic Patrol Prisoner and Granolah the Survivor storylines from the manga, as well as expanded versions of the Broly and Super Hero movies. Unfortunately, legal issues have held up production, making an announcement improbable. A second season of Dragon Ball DAIMA is also unlikely. Originally planned for just 20 episodes, the series received mixed reviews and didn’t perform as well as expected in ratings, and it was largely created by the late Akira Toriyama.
Considering everything, the best direction for the next Dragon Ball anime would be a remake of Dragon Ball GT. While fans generally agree that GT had great ideas, it wasn’t executed very well. A complete overhaul of the 64-episode series could address those issues and really bring those brilliant concepts to life. Plus, with the 30th anniversary of Dragon Ball GT coming up in 2026, the timing would be perfect.
Fans still have a lot of love for Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball DAIMA proved how excited people get for action-packed stories. Now, Goku, Pan, Trunks, and Giru can finally become the fun, powerful team they were meant to be. Villains like Baby and the Shadow Dragons can reach their full potential, and the issues with the original GT series can be fixed. A remake could even connect to the new Dragon Ball manga, using the manga’s events to set up the beginning of the GT remake and create a unified story across all the series.
Dragon Ball Fans Are Convinced a New Movie Will Be Released in 2027
Anime films based on well-known series are currently enjoying huge success, as demonstrated by the impressive box office results of films like Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man. This makes the possibility of a sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero very attractive to Toei Animation. Fueling the excitement, legendary animator Kazuhiko Torishima inquired with Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru about potentially working on a new Dragon Ball movie, and Nakatsuru didn’t deny the project’s existence. As a result, fans online are convinced that a new film is already in the works.
Another Dragon Ball movie would be a great alternative to a new anime series, and either one could successfully continue the franchise. A film focusing on the anticipated battle between the Saiyans and Black Frieza, or a second Tournament of Power, would almost certainly be a huge financial success. Plus, if the animation quality surpasses that of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, it could become the best Dragon Ball movie of all time and be remembered that way for many years.
Dragon Ball is the most popular anime franchise globally, and that’s unlikely to change soon. But to stay popular, the series needs fresh, well-made stories and new anime releases that appeal to a wide audience. If the announcements coming in January don’t deliver on these points, the future of Dragon Ball could be in trouble.
