RUMOR: Ant-Man Character May Die Offscreen Before Avengers: Doomsday

With so many characters in Avengers: Doomsday, it wasn’t surprising that not everyone from past films would be back. During a live stream event last March where Marvel announced the cast, several familiar actors weren’t mentioned, including Evangeline Lilly, who played Wasp in the Ant-Man movies. According to a report from The Beyond Reporter on X, her character will die without being shown on screen.

Rumors are often unreliable, but there’s something about this one that makes it feel more credible. While we should still be cautious, the details around it suggest it might be true.

Evangeline Lilly Steps Back from Acting

Last May, Lilly shared that she had a traumatic brain injury from a concussion after falling. Soon after, she announced she was taking a break from acting, explaining in a statement to Variety that she wasn’t bound by any contracts and planned to focus on writing and helping others.

In a video shared on social media on January 1st, she shared that recent brain scans showed most areas of her brain aren’t working as well as they used to.

Considering how things unfolded, it’s not certain if the directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, initially planned for the Wasp to be in Doomsday. They didn’t announce all the characters in the film last spring. However, the decision to have Wasp die instead of finding a new actress to play her will probably be controversial among fans.

Recasting vs. Replacing Characters in the MCU

Over the past two decades, Marvel has sometimes replaced actors in its movies. The most well-known instance is Don Cheadle stepping in as Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine, taking over from Terrence Howard – the reason for this change wasn’t publicly shared. Similarly, Mark Ruffalo took on the role of Bruce Banner/the Hulk after Edward Norton initially played the character, starting with The Avengers.

While it’s happened a few times, Marvel has generally done a great job keeping its original actors in their roles.

Following the unexpected passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Marvel chose not to immediately replace him as T’Challa/Black Panther, instead having the character die before the events of the next film. This decision has been a common point of criticism for Marvel, particularly because T’Challa hadn’t been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for very long. In the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, T’Challa’s sister, Shuri (played by Letitia Wright), became the new Black Panther.

Although Hope van Dyne (Wasp) might not survive the upcoming Doomsday film, Disney could introduce a new Wasp character if they decide to make another Ant-Man movie. Right now, though, Paul Rudd is the only actor confirmed to return as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in Doomsday.

Not much is known about what happens in Doomsday. It will be fascinating to discover if characters who aren’t in the movie experienced similar things, and whether that connects to the overall story.

Uncertain Fates for Other Heroes

As a big fan, I’ve been thinking about who isn’t in the Doomsday cast, and it’s a bit shocking! We’re missing major players like the Hulk, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, and the whole Guardians of the Galaxy team. I’m hoping they’re being saved for Avengers: Secret Wars, but with the buzz that Wasp and other heroes might not make it through, it feels like anyone could be in danger. It really makes you wonder what’s going to happen!

As the MCU prepares for a major shift with the upcoming film Doomsday, fans have a long wait ahead of them until its release on December 18, 2026.
