Robert Pattinson & Zendaya’s The Drama Sparks Controversy As Marketing For Plot Twist Is “Deeply Misaligned With The Reality”

The movie ‘The Drama,’ starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, is causing a buzz among viewers because of its surprising and divisive plot twist.

Directed by Kristoffer Borgli (known for Dream Scenario) and produced by Ari Aster (Hereditary), The Drama follows an engaged couple, Emma Harwood (Zendaya) and Charlie Thompson (Pattinson), whose wedding week is thrown into chaos when Emma reveals a shocking secret.

Fans of A24, a studio known for its unique and visually interesting films, were surprised by the way the movie was advertised and what actually happened in it. The poster, showing Zendaya and Pattinson smiling in wedding attire, led many to believe it would be a romantic story. While viewers anticipated some darkness, the film’s true nature was a shocking reveal.

In the play The Drama, Emma and Charlie are playing a drinking game when Emma reveals a shocking secret from her high school years: she once planned a school shooting. She explains that after transferring to a new school, she was severely bullied by her classmates. This led her to plan revenge, and she even wrote a manifesto detailing her plan to bring her father’s gun to school.

Fortunately, she didn’t follow through with her plans. But it wasn’t because she had a change of heart or realized it was a bad idea. She decided against it simply because she didn’t want her actions to be overshadowed by a recent shooting in town.

With school shootings becoming increasingly common, many moviegoers felt deceived by the film’s depiction of violence, considering what they expected when purchasing tickets. A popular Instagram post sparked a lot of discussion, with viewers sharing their opinions on a specific plot point – Emma’s secret – and whether it was handled sensitively.

Viewers have been critical of A24’s choices regarding the film, especially given the prevalence of gun violence in the country. Many Instagram users shared that they’ve personally experienced loss due to shootings. A common complaint was that the trailers didn’t indicate how much gun violence would be in the movie, and some said they wouldn’t have seen it if they’d known. One viewer expressed that the marketing felt misleading after discovering the film’s central plot point.

The film surprised many viewers, but some fans defended it. One person pointed out that it wasn’t advertised as a typical romantic comedy, and revealing a key secret in the trailer would have spoiled the story. Another viewer compared it to the marketing for The Drama, noting that the previews strongly hinted at a terrible act by the main character, stating, “The advertising clearly suggested she did something unforgivable.”

Because the movie just came out, neither Pattinson nor Zendaya has publicly addressed the controversy yet. But given the strong negative reaction, we might soon hear from them or the studio, A24.

The Drama is playing in theaters now.
