A fan created artwork imagines a showdown between Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., and a sandworm from the world of Dune, blending elements from Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three.
Two major movies are coming out on December 18th, a date fans are calling “Dunesday.” Robert Downey Jr., famous for playing Iron Man in Marvel films from 2008 to 2019, is now playing a famous villain. Both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are expected to be huge successes, just like the previous films in their series.
I have to say, this fan art is brilliant! Artist Bosslogic has imagined Doctor Doom wandering the deserts of Arrakis – you know, from Dune – and the image is striking. Doom’s cape is dramatically caught by the wind as he gazes up at a massive sandworm… with the Avengers logo in its mouth! The artist cleverly captioned it with “Puny worm,” which is a fantastic nod to the first Avengers movie. Remember when the Hulk famously called Loki a “puny god” before easily beating him? It’s that same energy, but with a sandworm. You can check out the awesome artwork below – seriously, it’s a must-see!
Robert Downey Jr. shared the artwork on his Instagram story, as fans pointed out. He’s already playfully acknowledged the simultaneous release of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, coining the term “Dunesday” at an event with Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet is returning as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming film, based on Dune: Messiah.
The phrase “puny worm,” a nod to the 2012 Avengers movie, establishes Doctor Doom as a truly exceptional villain. He isn’t fazed by the massive and powerful sandworms, suggesting he’ll react to the Avengers with the same dismissive attitude, no matter how strong a team they are. Some fans believe Avengers: Doomsday will open with Doctor Doom ruthlessly eliminating several fan-favorite characters.
The fan art continues a trend of concealing Doctor Doom’s face, mirroring the way the character has been introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He appeared in a post-credits scene for The Fantastic Four: First Steps without revealing his face, and his face hasn’t been shown in any of the four trailers released so far.
Alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the cast of Avengers: Doomsday features Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Florence Pugh will also return as Princess Irulan in Dune: Part Three, joining Zendaya as Chani, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica.
