Despite talk of audiences getting tired of superhero movies, it doesn’t seem to be true. Even shows that aren’t heavily advertised, like the excellent Wonder Man on Disney+, are doing well. So, when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters in December 2026, expect it to be a massive hit.
For the past few years, Robert Downey Jr. has consistently shown audiences what makes superhero movies so enjoyable and worthwhile.
Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Iron Man, particularly Tony Stark’s character and actions in films like Avengers: Endgame, has achieved a level of success that DC Studios is still striving for. Avengers: Endgame continues to resonate with audiences, recently returning to the top 10 most-streamed movies on Disney+ in the U.S. and reaching No. 6 worldwide – almost six years after its 2019 release.
It’s undeniable that Avengers: Endgame is a spectacular film, boasting incredible performances, a compelling story, and top-notch production quality. Years of careful planning across multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe movies culminated in this release, proving a brilliant strategy for captivating audiences and delivering a truly memorable experience. The long-term build-up was expertly handled, keeping fans invested in every detail before finally rewarding them with an unforgettable conclusion.
Can Robert Downey Jr. Deliver Marvel From Doom?
That headline is intentionally suggestive. The idea that people are getting tired of superhero movies isn’t just wrong – it’s going to become a much bigger and more annoying topic if Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t meet expectations. The pressure is especially high because Avengers: Endgame was seen as the end of the line for Iron Man and Captain America, and those actors – particularly Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans – were expected to retire those roles. While Downey Jr. did stop playing Iron Man, the expectation of a full retirement didn’t quite come to fruition.
Many Reddit users are upset about Steve Rogers not getting a peaceful retirement, with some feeling it disrespects Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Others see it as part of a larger trend at Marvel Studios: a reluctance to cast new actors in leading roles, instead relying on familiar faces like Robert Downey Jr., even for characters like Doctor Doom.
Look, no matter who you root for, it’s pretty clear Marvel’s put a huge amount of money – we’re talking over a billion dollars, plus tons more for advertising – into their next big movie. And they’re facing a really tough challenge: it needs to be even more amazing than Avengers: Endgame! It’s a lot to ask, but I’m still hopeful they can pull it off.
