Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has sparked a lot of debate, but it also has a strong and devoted fanbase. On IMDb, almost half a million viewers have rated both the entire series and each of its 16 episodes. The highest-rated episodes are “Udûn” from Season 1 (8.1) and “Doomed to Die” from Season 2 (7.9).
Although these two episodes of The Rings of Power featured different characters and happened at different times in the story, they both succeeded in connecting with the audience. This is encouraging for the show’s future, as the third season, if it stays true to J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, promises to deliver more of what viewers enjoyed.
The Rings of Power’s Two Highest-Rated Episodes Revolved Around Warfare
I was absolutely gripped by the battle in “Udûn” – it was the first truly large-scale conflict in The Rings of Power. It was heartbreaking to watch Adar and his forces, including those Southlanders who’d turned against their people, attack the village of Tirharad. He was desperate to find this ancient sword hilt, believing it held the key to unleashing Mount Doom. The villagers simply weren’t ready for such an onslaught, though they did try their best to defend their home. Just when things looked hopeless, Galadriel arrived with much-needed reinforcements from Númenor, and that finally started to shift the battle in a new direction. It was a brutal, intense fight, but her arrival gave everyone a glimmer of hope.
The episode “Doomed to Die” included the largest battle in The Rings of Power so far. As Adar finished creating the Nine Rings, he unwittingly helped Sauron’s plan to eliminate him and take control of his Orc army. Unlike the previous attack on Tirharad, Eregion was well-protected with walls and a trained army, making the battle feel more like the classic conflicts seen in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movies.
Viewers of The Rings of Power seem to really enjoy the big battle scenes, and those are expected to become even more frequent as the show goes on. While the first two seasons focused on the Dark Lord working behind the scenes, Season 3 will mark a shift towards more direct and open conflict.
Future Seasons of The Rings of Power Will Be Even Bloodier
The siege of Eregion in Tolkien’s stories kicked off an eight-year war where the Dark Lord Sauron started taking over land. He conquered almost all of northwestern Middle-earth, known as Eriador, except for the Elven settlements of Lindon and Rivendell. Although Sauron was defeated at one point, he later shifted his focus to destroying Númenor. After that, he returned to continue his violent rule over Middle-earth.
Sauron’s attack on the newly established kingdom of Gondor began the War of the Last Alliance, a conflict depicted in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This war was even bigger than previous conflicts between Elves and Sauron, lasting for 22 years. As described in The Silmarillion, the combined army of Elves and Men formed for this war was the largest ever assembled in the Second Age and beyond.
With the upcoming conflicts involving the Elves, Sauron, and the Last Alliance, the show is expected to feature even more action and battles, building on what viewers enjoyed most in the first two seasons. However, the creators will need to strike a balance to avoid overdoing the combat.
While the action in The Lord of the Rings is exciting, it wasn’t the fighting that made the story such a classic and enduring fantasy tale. The real heart of the story lies in its richly imagined world, its touching conversations, and the strong friendships between the characters.
The previous seasons resonated with viewers because people genuinely connected with the characters and were invested in what happened to them. If Season 3 of The Rings of Power effectively combines exciting action with meaningful character development, it has the potential to be the strongest season so far, possibly even delivering episodes that fans love as much as “Udûn” and “Doomed to Die.”
