Rings of Power Season 3: Prime Video’s Last Chance to Win Streaming Wars

Amazon’s Prime Video invested heavily in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, hoping it would become a major streaming hit. This year represents a crucial opportunity for the show to prove successful. Following the popularity of Game of Thrones, Amazon clearly believed there was a strong audience for epic fantasy, and combined with the well-known The Lord of the Rings brand, Rings of Power seemed like a guaranteed win.

After a couple of seasons, Rings of Power hasn’t become the massive success Amazon likely hoped for. While it hasn’t been a complete failure in terms of viewers or reviews, the show needed to be a huge hit given its enormous cost. It was intended to be the defining TV series of the decade, but instead, it’s found a more limited audience.

Rings Of Power Continues To Sit In House of The Dragon’s Shadow

Prime Video aimed to create the next big fantasy hit like Game of Thrones, but surprisingly, HBO actually delivered a continuation of that very series with House of the Dragon. To add to the challenge, House of the Dragon launched just weeks before Prime Video’s Rings of Power. While viewers can certainly enjoy multiple shows, it’s difficult for a new, specialized series to gain traction when competing with an already incredibly popular franchise.

Any chance of Rings of Power succeeding after House of the Dragon seemed to disappear when both shows premiered in the summer of 2024. While not released at exactly the same time, there was still too much overlap for Rings of Power to easily stand out.

Two years after their initial releases, both Rings of Power and House of the Dragon have finished filming their third seasons. This season, House of the Dragon on HBO will likely release all its episodes before Rings of Power begins airing. This timing could be beneficial, or it might make Rings of Power‘s launch seem less successful in comparison.

Prime Video’s Tentative Rings Of Power Release Schedule Is Its Last Chance To Command Streaming

The third season of House of the Dragon will arrive in summer 2026, although a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. As for The Rings of Power, Prime Video confirmed filming for season 3 finished in December 2025. Considering it took 14 months between filming completion and the release of the first two seasons, the new season likely won’t premiere until late 2026 at the earliest.

With season 3 of Rings of Power unable to premiere around the same time as House of the Dragon, this is Prime Video’s final opportunity to demonstrate the show’s quality. A different release window could be exactly what Rings of Power needs to succeed.

With House of the Dragon finished for now, fans might be searching for another fantasy series. The upcoming holidays could also bring a renewed interest in Lord of the Rings. However, a long wait between seasons could seriously hurt Rings of Power. Ultimately, if season 3 doesn’t attract more viewers, Prime Video may have to admit that Rings of Power isn’t ready to become a major streaming hit.
