The science fiction movie was a big success with both reviewers and viewers. It currently has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating widespread positive reception. Critics praised it as clever, exciting, and unexpectedly humorous, noting that it stays true to the original book and showcases strong performances from Matt Damon and direction from Ridley Scott.
The movie follows a team of astronauts exploring Mars. A powerful storm forces them to leave the planet earlier than planned, and in the chaos, they mistakenly believe Mark Watney is dead and leave him behind. They soon discover he’s alive, and realize they need to figure out how to return and rescue him with limited resources.
Beyond receiving excellent reviews, The Martian was also a big success at the box office. It earned $653.6 million around the world, despite costing only $108 million to make. By the end of the year, it ranked as the ninth-highest-grossing movie.
The Martian Received Acclaimed From a Real-Life Astrophysicist
While many science fiction movies take liberties with scientific accuracy, The Martian stands out as an exception. Astrophysicist Paul M. Sutter notes the film was remarkably realistic, and it received high praise for its portrayal of scientists and adherence to actual physics principles.
Sutton enthusiastically gave the clips a perfect score, saying, “I absolutely love this movie! It’s a fantastic story about science and how it can solve problems.”
The Martian leaves Netflix on Jan. 1.
