Ridley Scott & Tom Hardy’s “Gloriously Offensive” 91% Rated Thriller Series Deserves Another Look Before Season 2

Ridley Scott is known as a fantastic director, responsible for many great films. However, he’s also a highly respected producer with a track record of bringing compelling stories to the screen, both in movies and TV. Examples include series like The Man in the High Castle, Alien: Earth, and the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 for Prime Video. He also produced a 2017 thriller starring Tom Hardy that deserves a rewatch, especially with the second season on its way.

Created by Steven Knight and Tom and Chips Hardy, the FX thriller Taboo bears the creative influence of Ridley Scott, who served as an executive producer through his production company, Scott Free Productions. The series, set in 1814 London, stars Tom Hardy as James Delaney, a resourceful adventurer and businessman, and delves into the darker aspects of 19th-century society. Taboo feels more like a carefully crafted film than a typical TV show, distinguished by its detailed sets and bleak mood. It offers a unique look at the hardships faced by the working class and the widespread corruption within the East India Company.

Featuring a talented cast including Leo Bill, Jessie Buckley, Oona Chaplin, Stephen Graham, Jefferson Hall, David Hayman, Edward Hogg, and Mark Gatiss, the series Taboo first aired on FX in the US on January 10, 2017, and quickly earned rave reviews. It’s currently rated 76% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences loving it even more – giving it a 91% score. Critics have described it as both “gloriously offensive” and “one of the best series of the last 20 years.” You can now watch Taboo on Peacock or stream it for free on Tubi. Here’s what the series is about:

Okay, so this show is about James Keziah Delaney, a guy everyone thought was lost, who suddenly shows up back in London in 1814. He’s inherited his father’s shipping business, but things are way more complicated than they seem. Basically, he’s got a ton of enemies trying to make his life miserable. He’s determined to build a shipping empire that can take on the powerful East India Company, and he’s also out for revenge for his father’s death. That means lots of secrets, backstabbing, and violence. And while he’s trying to do all that, he’s also fighting for his own survival – someone really wants him dead!

When Does ‘Taboo’ Season 2 Come Out?

FX

After a successful first season that ended in February 2017, Taboo was quickly renewed for a second season the following month. However, both stars, Tom Hardy and Steven Knight, became very busy with other projects, which meant work on Season 2 had to be delayed. We still don’t have a release date, but there is some good news.

Both Hardy and Knight have indicated that a second season of Taboo is likely to happen. While no firm dates are set, filming is now a matter of scheduling, not if it will occur at all. Knight recently told Radio Times that the scripts are complete, and they’re simply waiting to find the right time to begin production. He also mentioned he frequently receives questions about the show, particularly from viewers in the United States.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Taboo lately, and while we’re all eagerly waiting for news on Season 2, I highly recommend revisiting the first season if you haven’t already. All eight episodes are currently available to stream on Peacock and Tubi, and trust me, it’s worth the dive.
