Ricky and Morty Star Harry Belden Thinks Season 9 Will Be Higher Quality Than Seasons 7 & 8

The actors who voice the characters in Rick and Morty have given fans a sneak peek at what to expect from Season 9, describing the upcoming episodes as “killer”. The popular animated show, famous for its crazy science fiction stories and cynical comedy, recently finished airing Season 8 on Adult Swim.

In a recent conversation with David Thompson from TopMob, Rick and Morty stars Ian Cardoni (who voices Rick) and Harry Belden (who voices Morty) gave fans an update on the progress of Season 9. Belden stated that Season 9 is “going really, really well,” and mentioned that Cardoni “just wrapped his principal recording” while he only has one more “banger” episode left to record.

Things are going great! It’s progressing very well, and yes, we are recording everything. Ian has already finished his main recording work. I just have one more episode left to complete, and it’s a really good one, I can tell you that.

Cardoni urged viewers to watch Season 8, hinting that Season 9’s plot will continue directly from it and take advantage of the show’s current “really good groove.”

We’re currently working incredibly well as a team, and we’re thankful that they enjoy playing these characters and are happy with the direction we’re taking the story. We believe fans will be very excited by what they experience in Season 9, especially considering the journey they took in Season 8.

Belden also complimented the show’s ongoing success, saying, “the quality just keeps improving,” and shared his belief that Season 9 “will be another hit.”

Honestly, the show just keeps getting better and better. In my opinion, Season 7 was the best I’d ever seen, but then Season 8 surpassed it. I believe Season 9 will raise the bar even higher. These episodes are phenomenal, truly.

As the main actors are finishing up their work on the latest episodes, Cardoni did let us know they haven’t heard anything about when Season 9 will “air,” which isn’t entirely surprising. He even joked that “They didn’t even really tell us when [Season 8] was coming out until close to it!” It’s funny how these things work – even those involved don’t always know the release date until pretty late in the game.

We definitely don’t have a release date for you at this time. We wish we did… They didn’t inform us about when Season 8 would be released until just before it actually came out.

Rick and Morty Season 8 ended a consistent pattern when it premiered in 2025. It was the first time the show hadn’t released a new season every year since 2019. This break happened because of widespread production issues caused by the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, which meant filming didn’t start until 2024 and pushed back the season’s launch.

Following the conclusion of Season 7 in late 2023 – the first season created without Justin Roiland – there was a pause in new episodes. Although a Rick and Morty anime spin-off was released in 2024, fans didn’t see any further installments of the main series until recently. Season 8 just finished airing its ten episodes on Adult Swim, and it included a particularly touching scene where Rick Sanchez made the difficult decision to erase his memories of Diane.

When Will Rick and Morty Season 9 Release?

Rick and Morty has been officially renewed up to Season 12, as of October 2024. This means fans can expect new episodes to continue airing, probably until 2029. Although the show didn’t release a new season in 2024, it’s planned to go back to releasing a season each year. Therefore, Season 9 is likely to premiere around 2026.

In the past, even when Rick and Morty released new seasons in consecutive years, they’ve always been spaced out by different months. This likely means a May 2026 premiere is unlikely, considering Season 8 started in May 2025. Based on what voice actors Cardoni and Belden have said, the most probable time for the next season to arrive is late summer or early fall of 2026.
