Rich’s Death In It: Welcome To Derry Proves It’s Not Stranger Things

The seventh episode of ‘Welcome to Derry‘ powerfully depicts Rich’s death, emphasizing a significant difference between this show and ‘Stranger Things’.

Ricardo Santos, nicknamed “Rich,” was a particularly likable character in It: Welcome to Derry, leading many viewers to expect he wouldn’t survive the series. This belief was strengthened by the fact that he’s absent from the future events shown in the films. Despite the widespread anticipation of his death, it still felt impactful when it happened in episode 7 of It: Welcome to Derry.

The show handles the young character’s death with a touching beauty, giving him a brave and noble end instead of simply making him another victim. This also demonstrates that while sharing similarities with Stranger Things, It: Welcome to Derry isn’t afraid to take its own unique path.

Unlike Stranger Things’ Main Young Characters, The Ones In Welcome To Derry Get No Plot Armor

The core group of characters in Stranger Things have remained consistent since the very beginning, and remarkably, they’ve all survived the dangers they’ve faced. It: Welcome to Derry, however, takes a different approach, freely eliminating characters who initially appear to be central to the story.

Right from the start, It: Welcome to Derry makes it clear it’s not aiming to be another Stranger Things or a watered-down horror series. The show instead emphasizes the grim and violent nature of the town, where Pennywise’s evil touches everyone. Even Rich’s death reinforces this, showing how the town itself is dangerous, even if he wasn’t directly killed by the monster.

Similar to shows like Stranger Things, It: Welcome to Derry initially seemed like a story where good ultimately triumphs over evil. However, Rich’s sacrifice shows that doing the right thing can come at a great personal cost. While his bravery will likely motivate the other kids to fight Pennywise with more determination, his death will also be another deeply upsetting experience that robs them of their childhood innocence.

This proves Derry is no Hawkins. It is, as Stephen King described,

“…only marginally more charming than a dead hooker in a church pew.”

Welcome To Derry’s Brutality Makes Pennywise Seem Scarier & More Powerful Than Vecna

Objectively, Pennywise would easily defeat Vecna. Pennywise isn’t even human – his power is comparable to the ancient, cosmic horrors in Lovecraft’s stories. The way Pennywise slowly corrupts and takes over the entire town of Derry demonstrates a level of influence that Vecna simply can’t match.

The fact that characters in It: Welcome to Derry aren’t automatically saved highlights how much more powerful Pennywise is compared to Vecna from Stranger Things. Unlike Vecna, Pennywise can’t be defeated by humans alone. Even characters with telepathic abilities, like Dick Hallorann, are no match for this ancient evil. The best humanity can do is try to contain it, but even imprisonment doesn’t fully stop Pennywise from influencing the people of Derry.
