As a long-time viewer of Lucasfilm Animation, I’ve always been impressed by how they consistently push boundaries while still maintaining a really recognizable look. They first made a splash with the beautiful, almost hand-painted computer animation of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” and haven’t really strayed far from that core style. Each series, like the streamlined look of “Star Wars Rebels” or the more detailed visuals of “The Bad Batch,” feels fresh, but still clearly connected to the world established in “Clone Wars.” They’ve really managed to evolve without losing what makes their animation special.
Lucasfilm’s animators have truly outdone themselves with their new Disney+ series, “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.” The 10-episode show builds on the visual style of “The Clone Wars” but introduces a bold new color scheme, dramatic lighting, and atmospheric shadows to match its darker, more intense story. It’s a beautiful series to watch, and it offers much more than just stunning visuals.
I’ve been following Darth Maul’s story for a while now, and “Maul – Shadow Lord” just adds another layer to his incredible journey. It’s amazing how much depth they’ve given him, considering he was only really in two of the original Star Wars movies. Through comics and shows, they’ve really explored his life – from the pain of being Darth Sidious’s apprentice, to finding his brother after everyone thought he’d died, and even becoming a major power player running a huge criminal organization. It’s been a really compelling story of rage and suffering, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited to see “Shadow Lord” fill in some missing pieces of Darth Maul’s story. It’s great to see connections made that really reward longtime fans of both Maul and the wider franchise. The series is set just a year after “Revenge of the Sith” and the end of “The Clone Wars”, a really dark time as the Empire is taking hold. It’s a brutal period – most of the Jedi are gone, and those who survived are being actively hunted by Vader and his Inquisitors. On top of that, all the criminal organizations are scrambling for control in a galaxy that’s quickly becoming a lot more dangerous.
On the planet Janix, Maul—again voiced by Sam Witwer—has landed with a small team. This team includes two other Zabraks, several Mandalorian mercenaries, and a secretive spy droid. He establishes a base in the city’s deserted lower levels and starts planning revenge against two crime lords who betrayed him. However, Maul’s true goals on Janix are far more significant than just getting even.
Darth Maul’s powerful connection to the Force has brought him to Janix, where he’s searching for a young Twi’lek Jedi named Devon (Gideon Adlon) and her Master, Eeko-Dio-Daki (Dennis Haysbert), who are both in hiding. Maul believes Devon would be the perfect apprentice and a powerful tool to defeat his enemy, Darth Sidious. Sam Witwer delivers another outstanding performance, fully embodying the character he’s known for.
“Shadow Lord” isn’t just about following Darth Maul and his schemes. Creator Dave Filoni and his writers also introduce different viewpoints, notably through a new character, Detective Brander Lawson (voiced by Oscar nominee Wagner Moura). While Maul deals with rival gangs, Lawson investigates as the head of the police, and his discoveries will have a big impact on the planet Janix.
The character of Lawson is compelling and unexpectedly anchors the story. It frequently feels like a standard police investigation, blending the style of shows like “CSI” with the intensity of crime movies such as “Heat.” Moura perfectly portrays Lawson as a brilliant and determined detective, but one who is clearly burdened by the toll his work has taken on him. When violence breaks out, Lawson understands he should notify the Empire, but he’s determined to handle things locally, worried that the Empire will seize control of Janix and never relinquish it.
Devon and Eeko-Dio-Daki are living in hiding on the streets of Janix, trying to stay unnoticed after the terrible events of Order 66. They’ve built a strong relationship as master and apprentice, evolving into something like a father and daughter bond. However, Daki’s attempts to keep Devon safe and hidden clash with her desire to use her abilities, and this frustrates her. Daki worries this frustration could make Devon vulnerable to someone manipulative like Maul.
As expected, the storylines of the three main groups quickly come together, creating intense drama and leading to exciting action. The story also includes unexpected twists that breathe new life into the established Star Wars universe. While it features many familiar elements that longtime fans will love, “Shadow Lord” also carves out its own unique identity. Don’t mistake this for just another Darth Maul story – it’s much more than that.
“Maul: Shadow Lord” perfectly demonstrates why animation continues to be a beloved way to tell stories in the Star Wars universe for fans of all ages. Dave Filoni and his talented team have created a captivating addition to the story of a popular character. It’s a thrilling experience with stunning visuals, impressive action sequences, well-developed characters, and intense moments, including exciting lightsaber battles. The series also fills in important gaps in the Star Wars timeline and builds anticipation for future events. With a second season already confirmed by Filoni, fans won’t have to wait long for the next chapter.
