In the surprise follow-up to 2021’s underrated action comedy-thriller “Nobody,” Bob Odenkirk reprises his role. The sequel, simply named “Nobody 2,” offers the same entertaining blend of brutal fight sequences and dark humor that garnered praise from both audiences and critics in the original film. It stretches believability a bit, primarily for comedic effect, but not so much that it loses its hard-hitting appeal.
For this upcoming project, Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto steps into the director’s chair for his first English-language film, titled “Nobody 2”. Derek Kolstad and Aaron Rabin have penned the screenplay for this sequel. In the original movie, we saw ex-CIA assassin Hutch Mansell (portrayed by Odenkirk) incinerate money belonging to the Russian mafia. His former supervisor, The Barber (Colin Salmon), covered his debt incurred from that incident. Now, Hutch finds himself compelled to repay this obligation by accepting missions on behalf of The Barber.

At home, Hutch’s frequent absences are causing strain on his relationships with his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen), their elder son Brady (Gage Munroe), and younger child Sammy (Paisley Cadorath). In an attempt to reconnect with his family, Hutch plans a family vacation to Plummerville, a town he cherished during his childhood. Accompanied by his father David (Christopher Lloyd), Hutch sets off on a journey reminiscent of the Griswalds, aiming to create lasting memories together.
It appears that trouble seems to accompany Hutch wherever he travels, and Plummerville is no exception. The town is under the control of a shady businessman named Wyatt Martin (John Ortiz), who essentially serves as a puppet for a local crime syndicate. This criminal organization, led by the merciless and unstable Lendina (Sharon Stone), uses Plummerville as a base for their profitable illicit liquor trade. However, upon Hutch’s arrival, he unwittingly disrupts Lendina’s operations.
The story unfolds when Hutch encounters the town’s corrupt and ambitious sheriff Abel (Colin Hanks), leading to a series of violent confrontations involving numerous henchmen. This sequence of physical altercations disrupts Becca’s plans for peaceful family time. The blend of action and humor, along with the family dynamic, provides an entertaining twist to the movie.

In the shift from the gritty, action-thriller tone of the initial movie to a lighter, action-comedy feel, Odenkirk excellently portrays Hutch’s dual roles – the ordinary man masking his one-man assassin persona. He adds a touch of humor and genuine emotion to his character this time around. Nielsen relishes in her expanded role and more developed character arc. As for Stone, she delivers amusing, exaggerated performances, but some viewers might find her too excessively over-the-top.
