Well-known horror director Zach Cregger is making his first feature film. Previous versions of this story have often been criticized for changing the original material, so Cregger anticipates some fans might not be happy with his new take, which is scheduled for release in theaters this year.
Zach Cregger, the director of films like Barbarian and Weapons, recently discussed his upcoming Resident Evil reboot in an interview with the New York Times. He anticipates some fan backlash upon the film’s release—something he expects with adaptations of this kind. However, Cregger also promised the reboot will be exceptionally intense, unlike anything audiences have seen before.
The New Resident Evil Will Be Very Intense
He said he enjoys the thrill of a story where the main character is fighting for survival against overwhelming odds, and he hasn’t found that feeling in other movies recently.
The film’s director had initially indicated that the movie wouldn’t include any characters players would recognize from the video games, opting instead for a completely new story and cast. He didn’t want to retell familiar storylines. However, Cregger is a big fan of the original Resident Evil games and plans to capture their atmosphere while still respecting the established story and world.
Last year, Cregger explained to Inverse that his work doesn’t violate the established rules of the game series. As a huge fan himself, he sees his story as a tribute to the games, carefully following their internal logic and established world. He emphasized that he’s creating something new, not retelling existing narratives. ‘I’m not trying to replicate Leon’s story,’ he said, ‘because players already know that one.’
Previous Resident Evil Films Have Been Criticized
Paul W.S. Anderson was the first to bring the Resident Evil video game to the big screen, launching a film series with a new, original character. While those movies included some familiar faces, they significantly changed the game’s storyline. In contrast, Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City aimed to stay closer to the games by featuring popular characters, but it was criticized for trying to fit the stories of the first two games into a single, short movie.
The latest Resident Evil movie features Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson. The screenplay was co-written by director Cregger and Shay Hatten, who previously worked on the zombie film Army of the Dead. The story centers around a courier who becomes entangled in the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City.
Cregger’s Resident Evil will hit theaters on Sept. 18, 2026.
