Every Major Spoiler for Reminders of Him, According to the Book

Kenna & Scotty’s Car Crash & Kenna’s Prison Sentence

Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him opens with a devastating car accident that claims the life of Scotty and leaves his longtime partner, Kenna, to grapple with the aftermath. Though not legally at fault, Kenna feels responsible for Scotty’s death, believing her failure to act contributed to the tragedy. She ultimately pleads guilty, acknowledging that her inaction was a critical factor in his death.

“I may not have killed him with my actions, but I definitely killed him with my inaction.”

Okay, so this is a crazy story. Kenna ended up pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, but what nobody knew at the time was she was pregnant with Scotty’s baby! She later had a daughter, Diem, but because Kenna went to prison, she had to give Diem to Scotty’s parents to raise. It’s a really heartbreaking situation, honestly.

Around 45 seconds into the trailer, Maika Monroe’s character, Kenna, is shown receiving a prison sentence, suggesting the film will closely follow the plot of the original book.

After being released from prison after five years, she chose to return to the town where Scotty grew up, wanting to be near those who had known him. She was also trying to gain custody of her daughter, Diem, but Scotty’s parents refused, still blaming her for their son’s death and unwilling to let her raise Diem.

Kenna’s First Meeting with Ledger

The novel Reminders of Him features Ledger Ward, an attractive and charming bar owner and ex-NFL player who becomes Kenna’s love interest. He has a surprising connection to Scotty’s past. The trailer showcases their first encounter, hinting at a secret about Scotty that they will eventually discover together.

Kenna and Ledger felt an instant connection and began a relationship. However, Kenna wasn’t honest with Ledger, introducing herself as Nicole instead of her real name. She also kept thinking about her ex, Scotty, and remembered she’d planned to meet his best friend the night Scotty told her he loved her, but that meeting never happened. It turned out Ledger was Scotty’s best friend, and Kenna distanced herself, still grieving for her late boyfriend and confused about her feelings.

Ledger eventually discovered who Kenna really was and questioned her reasons for coming back to town. They initially argued, fueled by Kenna’s desperate need to connect with her daughter, but eventually fell in love. However, their relationship was complicated by Scotty’s parents, who didn’t approve of her.

The Landrys’ Hatred Toward Kenna & Eventual Confrontation with Ledger

Patrick and Grace Landry, Scotty’s parents, were raising their granddaughter, Diem, and were reluctant to return her to her mother, Kenna. They still held Kenna responsible for Scotty’s death, which made the situation difficult. Adding to the complexity, Ledger had become very close to Diem, acting as a sort of uncle.

The legal battle over their daughter began as soon as Kenna announced her pregnancy. Ultimately, Kenna lost custody even before the baby was born, largely due to the limited rights of a mother who is serving a multi-year prison sentence.

After being released, Kenna desperately hoped the Landrys would forgive her. She believed that with time, they would understand how important she was to Diem and ultimately realize Diem needed her mother in her life.

The dislike towards Kenna began before the accident. The trailer shows what appears to be Kenna’s first meeting with Scotty’s parents around the 27-second mark. Although the footage doesn’t reveal much, the book explains that this meeting was the starting point for the Landrys’ strong animosity towards her.

Even before the crash, the Landrys didn’t seem to accept Kenna as a future partner for their son. The accident only intensified their feelings. In the trailer, around the 2:03 mark, Kenna’s frantic attempt to reach her daughter is shown as she chases Grace and Diem in the parking lot of her work.

Look, the relationship between Patrick Landry, Ledger, and Kenna is clearly a central conflict in this film. I was really struck by a moment in the trailer – around the 2:09 mark – where Patrick just explodes and punches Ledger. It’s obvious he feels deeply betrayed, and that secret relationship between Ledger and Kenna is the source of all the tension. It’s a powerful scene and really sets the stage for a dramatic fallout.

The argument stemmed from long-held resentment and frustration, as Patrick brought up Ledger’s tendency to make them feel responsible for a decision they made five years prior regarding Diem and Scotty.

Despite the accusations, Ledger remained loyal to Kenna after discovering the real story behind the accident. It wasn’t what everyone thought – Kenna hadn’t abandoned Scotty. The incident was a genuine accident. To prove Kenna’s innocence and show her deep love for both Scotty and their daughter, Diem, Ledger shared a letter she had written.

The Truth Behind the Accident

The new trailer for Reminders for Him showed parts of the car accident that killed Scotty, including the crash itself and Kenna running to get help. The book explains that Kenna initially thought Scotty died instantly, but later discovered he survived for several hours.

If Kenna had known Scotty was still alive, she would have stayed to help instead of going for assistance. Unfortunately, she was confused and hurt, and she collapsed once she got home.

Ledger learned the full story from Kenna, who explained everything that happened during the accident. Once he understood what had occurred, Ledger was deeply upset by how people had treated Kenna, realizing no one had properly acknowledged her loss that night.

Eventually, everyone calmed down when Ledger read Kenna’s letters to Scotty while the Landrys listened. He explained that Kenna had been suffering just as much as they had over the last five years, and that by constantly revisiting the past, they were only making things worse for her.

His most damaging admission was likely pointing out that separating a mother from her child was a mistake, and that Scotty would be furious if he knew about it.

Grace eventually forgave Kenna and even gave her the ring Scotty had intended to use when he proposed. After reading Kenna’s letter to Scotty, Grace realized she’d overreacted and was able to let go of her anger. She also allowed Kenna to finally meet Diem, which made Kenna incredibly happy and grateful. Patrick also reconciled with Kenna, and they shared a very emotional hug, almost bringing both of them to tears.

When Kenna and Diem first met, it was a wonderful experience for Kenna’s mother. Diem quickly won her over with her warm acceptance.

The book concluded by jumping ahead in time, showing Kenna and Ledger married with a son named after Scotty.
