This story contains spoilers for the movie Regretting You. If you haven’t seen it yet, be careful – you’ve been warned!
Okay, so 2025 might not be overflowing with romantic comedies, but I have to say, Regretting You actually surprised me with two compelling love stories, both pulled from Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us. You’ve got the sweet, youthful connection between Mason Thames and Mckenna Grace as Miller and Clara – honestly, I’m still thinking about their coming-of-age story – and then there’s the more established, complex relationship between Allison Williams and Dave Franco as Morgan and Jonah. I recently spoke with the cast for TopMob, and they revealed some interesting alternate directions they considered for Miller and Clara’s arc. Let’s dive into what I learned!
The Regretting You Ending Between Clara And Jonah
In Regretting You, Clara, played by Mckenna Grace, is navigating a difficult time filled with loss and change after her father (Scott Eastwood) unexpectedly passes away. Her mother (Williams) is also struggling, but Clara finds some happiness in a new relationship with Miller. Their connection hits a snag after a birthday dinner leads to an argument and a strained parting.
Clara and her mother had a difficult birthday dinner, but it ultimately led to a heartfelt reconciliation. Morgan revealed a long-held secret: her husband had been having an affair with Clara’s aunt, explaining why she’d been struggling recently. This revelation helped Clara understand her mother’s behavior, and both women agreed they deserved happiness. The night ended with a surprise kiss for Miller at his work, and Miller asking Clara to prom with a sweet, homemade video. They also discovered they’d both been accepted to the same performing arts college.
How Regretting You’s Ending Could Have Been Different
During interviews with TopMob for Regretting You, Mason Thames and Mckenna Grace discussed an earlier version of the film they would have preferred. As Mason Thames explained:
Interestingly, the scene where Clara tackles Miller was originally planned to happen during a rainstorm. The idea was that she’d come inside soaked from the rain, but they ended up not filming it that way.
The kiss actually happened under quite different circumstances than expected. Instead of Clara and Miller sharing a memorable, romantic moment in the rain, it was Morgan and Jonah who ended up kissing. As Grace pointed out:
We weren’t involved in filming that scene. It was added later for Morgan’s storyline – she got a dramatic rain sequence. All we had to do was film a kissing scene in a public movie theater.
I completely understand why the scene with Morgan and Jonah kissing in the rain resonated with people. Their relationship has been developing for over 15 years, since they were teenagers, making it feel truly earned. Also, Grace shared a funny story about Franco pretending to be a teenager while filming!
Though Grace and Thames didn’t share a romantic scene like a kiss in the rain, they’re already planning to collaborate on a new film about Green Day called New Years Rev. Plus, their positive response to fan casting them in a *Tangledinspired project suggests they’re open to working together on many future projects.
