The main excitement around Red Hood #1 lies in its focus on mature themes. Unlike other DC All-In titles, DC Black Label typically handles such content. However, ‘mature readers’ here doesn’t just mean adult content like sex and violence; it also refers to the deep, thoughtful portrayal of Jason Todd, reflecting another aspect of maturity.
In issue one of Red Hood, we find ourselves in New Angelique, a city steeped in heat and situated somewhere within the American South. This city, along with its law enforcement, is under attack by an enigmatic serial killer, who seems to possess mysterious mind-controlling abilities or supernatural powers. As this bizarre case unfolds, it serves as a timely diversion for Jason Todd, allowing him to momentarily step away from the aftermath of the Hush saga’s events.

In simpler terms, Jason gains assistance from a nearby vigilante known as Royale. He also encounters Huntress, who’s chasing the suspect in this case. But New Angelique keeps her truth hidden, and before long, Red Hood finds himself caught up in a situation that has nothing to do with the local climate or food.
New Red Hood has a heavy Noir influence
In essence, Red Hood #1 follows a style more reminiscent of a gritty detective tale rather than a typical superhero comic. Instead of just portraying Jason Todd as an action-oriented anti-hero, this narrative delves deeper into his character. He’s depicted as a detective who carries a gun, interrogates suspects, and navigates the complications introduced by a mysterious femme fatale. This approach offers a richer understanding of Jason’s personality, making it more intriguing than usual portrayals of him. Moreover, the comic touches upon his complex emotions regarding his death and resurrection.
In Red Hood #1, not only does Jason Todd take center stage, but the city of New Angelique is also portrayed as a distinct character in its own right. Gretchen Felker-Martin’s script paints a vivid picture of the city with rich details, and Jeff Spokes’ artwork, complete with lavishly Baroque backdrops, adds to this intricate portrait. While it bears a resemblance to New Orleans, New Angelique feels like a unique and tangible location instead of just another generic urban dystopia. This introduction evokes the Dixon/McDaniel Nightwing run, which introduced and developed the city of Bludhaven.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Red Hood #1 delivers everything you’d expect from a stellar first issue and executes it flawlessly. It skillfully introduces our protagonist, sets an engaging scene, and presents a compelling central conflict that leaves readers eager for more. The action sequences are intense yet fitting, and unlike some mature-rated comics, it steers clear of excessive brutality, using its rating responsibly. In my opinion, this stands out as the most captivating detective comic to emerge from DC Comics in years.
Grade: 10/10
