A reboot of the beloved sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 seems unlikely right now, though fans still hold out hope. The original show aired from 1997 to 2007 and remains popular with a dedicated fanbase. While there have been other shows set in the Stargate universe, a full reboot hasn’t gained much traction. A potential sequel series planned by Martin Gero at Amazon could have opened the door for a revival, but with that project canceled, those chances appear to be gone.

While it might not be happening right away, the strong following for this sci-fi show makes a revival or reboot feel likely eventually – maybe in five, ten, or even twenty years. With a little patience and continued support from fans, it should happen. So, let’s start thinking now: who could replace the original cast of Stargate SG-1?
Colonel Jack O’Neil – Sam Worthington
Kurt Russell was the first actor to play Colonel Jack O’Neil, appearing in the original Stargate movie. Later, for the TV series Stargate SG-1, Richard Dean Anderson – famous for his role on MacGyver – took over the part and became known as the definitive Jack O’Neil. Anderson brought a tough, witty personality to the character, but also revealed hidden vulnerability as the show progressed. Any future actor taking on the role should aim to capture that same blend of ruggedness and underlying sensitivity.
I genuinely think Sam Worthington would be perfect for a new Stargate series! He’s already proven he can handle big action and sci-fi roles – just look at Avatar and Terminator Salvation. He’s got that natural strength, but also the ability to show vulnerability underneath a tough exterior, which is exactly what Jack O’Neill needs. Plus, he even bears a bit of a resemblance to Richard Dean Anderson, so it would feel like a seamless continuation. I can totally see him stepping into that role and owning it.
Captain Samantha Carter – Yvonne Strahovski
It’s hard to picture anyone but Amanda Tapping as Captain Samantha Carter. She was one of the original characters from the start of Stargate SG-1, so the role never needed to be re-cast after the movie. Tapping brought a playful, confident, and optimistic energy to Sam, along with intelligence and compassion. Her strong on-screen connection with Michael Anderson added another layer to the show, as their chemistry was clear and immediately captivated viewers.
Samantha Carter, similar to Jack O’Neill, is a strong character with hidden vulnerabilities, but she handles them more gracefully and accepts herself better. That’s why Yvonne Strzechowski was a great choice to play her – she often portrays characters with this same blend of strength and emotional depth. Her role as Sarah Walker in Chuck is particularly comparable. Even her experience playing the complex Serena Joy Waterford in The Handmaid’s Tale could be useful, considering how often Sam Carter faces difficult moral challenges.
Dr. Daniel Jackson – Andrew Garfield
The switch from James Spader to Michael Shanks as the character of Dr. Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1 felt seamless after the original Stargate movie. Dr. Jackson was written to be a bit of an awkward intellectual, charming in a clumsy way – a deliberate contrast to Jack O’Neill’s natural charisma. He’s brilliant but often unsure of himself. Beyond that, Daniel is fiercely dedicated to defending the vulnerable, even if it means facing powerful enemies armed only with his extensive knowledge of languages.
Andrew Garfield is undeniably charming and intelligent, qualities he’s shown in roles like Spider-Man and others. He often plays characters who are a bit awkward and insecure, but also very capable. It’s easy to see him fitting into a role similar to those played by James Spader and John Shanks – a relatable, intelligent character who would bravely risk everything to protect others.
Teal’c – Mike Colter
Christopher Judge, unlike many of his former co-stars on Stargate SG-1, continues to work steadily in the entertainment world. He recently attended San Diego Comic-Con to talk about his role in the new God of War: Laufey game. While it’s voice acting, fans are hopeful he might reprise his iconic role as Teal’c if Stargate SG-1 were ever revived. Age wouldn’t be a factor for the character, and it’s difficult to picture anyone else capturing Judge’s unique blend of imposing physicality and dry humor quite like he does.
If Judge isn’t available, Mike Colter could be a great choice for the role. He’s familiar with science fiction action thanks to his work as Luke Cage in several Marvel shows like Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Colter has a naturally powerful voice and impressive height – he’s six foot three! If he can convincingly portray a character who hides their feelings, but still manages to be funny or endearing, he’d be perfect for bringing Teal’c back to the Stargate universe.
Lieutenant General George S. Hammond – James Spader
Don S. Davis was well-known for playing Lieutenant General George S. Hammond on Stargate SG-1. He’d previously established himself in military roles on shows like Twin Peaks and The X-Files. Though often frustrated by the actions of characters like Jack O’Neill, Davis consistently portrayed Hammond as a likable and reliable leader. He supported the SG-1 team, readily trusting them with difficult decisions and even the fate of the world, while also knowing when to set boundaries.
With the passing of Richard Dean Anderson in 2008, it’s crucial that any potential reboot of Stargate SG-1 finds the right actor to take on a leadership role. James Spader, who was part of the original Stargate movie from 1994 and has had a successful career ever since, would be an excellent choice. He’s known for bringing depth and intensity to his performances – qualities that fit well with a character carrying significant responsibility. Having him play the role of SG-1’s Lieutenant General would feel both fitting and like a nice nod to the show’s history.
