Fans are in for a treat! The series is coming back later this year, and a beautiful, full-color graphic novel version is also being released. The original creator, Ernest Cline, has already given it his enthusiastic approval.
Adapted from Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel by Scott Peterson (known for his work on Batman: Gotham Adventures) and Meredith Laxton (The Crow), a full-color graphic novel version is coming soon. It will be available as a Target exclusive hardcover on October 6th. Paperback and hardcover editions will then be released at other stores in March 2027, and a graphic novel adaptation of Ready Player Two is already scheduled for 2028.
Original Ready Player One Author Praises New Graphic Novel Adaptation

A press release on Bleeding Cool featured a statement from Ernest Cline about the graphic novel adaptation of his book. He said he’s really enjoyed working with the team at Ten Speed Graphic and is thrilled to see Ready Player One reimagined as a graphic novel.
Cline explained that the story has always been about the excitement of escaping into a different world, and Meredith Laxton’s beautiful artwork really enhances that feeling. He believes this new version perfectly captures the spirit, comedy, and suspense of Wade’s adventure, offering even longtime fans something new to enjoy.
Aaron Wehner, publisher at Ten Speed Press, explained that their main aim was to both stay true to the original story and take full advantage of the graphic novel medium. He said the adaptation successfully captures the grand scope, emotional depth, and detailed world-building of the OASIS in a visually compelling way.
In the year 2045, the world is a difficult place, and many people escape into a virtual reality called the OASIS. When the creator of the OASIS dies, he launches a pop-culture-based treasure hunt, promising control of the virtual world to whoever solves it. Wade Watts, a young man who finds solace in the OASIS, embarks on the challenge, but quickly discovers he’s not alone – dangerous rivals will stop at nothing to win.
Ready Player One’s Story Remains a Hit 15 Years Later
Even though Ernest Cline’s novel was first published 15 years ago, it remains popular, and the recent graphic novel version is already a hit. Currently, it’s the top new release in the Dystopian Graphic Novels category on Amazon.
Since its release, Ready Player One has become even more popular, especially after Steven Spielberg directed a major film adaptation in 2018. The movie starred Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, alongside Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. Ernest Cline revealed plans for a sequel in 2020, and as of 2024, is involved in its production, though not as the director.
Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel is now available for pre-order.
