Maria Sten plays Jack Reacher’s closest friend in the series. While she’s been a consistent character since the beginning, a separate show focusing on Frances Neagley could actually lead to better adaptations of Lee Child’s novels. Sometimes, simplifying things is the best approach.
Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series has plenty of source material for adaptations – more than could ever be used! While the new Frances Neagley spinoff can draw plot ideas from the books, Neagley isn’t as fleshed out a character as Reacher. This gives the show creators a great opportunity to build her personality and backstory from the ground up.
Frances Neagley Is a Minor Character in Lee Child’s Reacher Series
Frances Neagley, a character who inspired the Reacher series, first appeared in the book Bad Luck and Trouble, which formed the basis for Season 2 of the show. She only features in six of Lee Child’s novels and short stories in total. The popularity of Maria Sten, who plays Neagley on screen, might encourage the author to include the character more in future books. This is partly because television allows for different storytelling techniques than those used in novels.
One notable difference between the show and the books is how much Jack Reacher speaks. The character is famous for being a man of few words, often saying very little to anyone. While the show naturally requires Reacher to speak more than he does in the novels, he still avoids long speeches or revealing his personal thoughts. This is why the character Neagley is so important.
She understands people exceptionally well, allowing her to express thoughts and feelings that others typically keep to themselves. Whether it’s about Reacher grieving his brother or his early student, Dominique Kohl, Neagley can verbalize what he’s thinking but doesn’t say.
This character isn’t afraid to speak her mind, even when it’s difficult. Unlike other characters who exist to help others, she drives her own story. She’s also more emotionally aware than Reacher, as she processes her feelings openly instead of keeping them bottled up.
This doesn’t make her a better fighter, but it allows her to share her thoughts and emotions with the audience. While it’s good storytelling to show things through action rather than just tell about them, simply talking isn’t the same as overwhelming viewers with too much information.
Neagley Can Further Develop the Character Without Source Material
As a huge fan of the Reacher books and show, I’ve always found Neagley fascinating. One thing that struck me is how true to the source material the series adaptation of her is – even more so than Reacher himself! Lee Child deliberately kept her as an external character, never letting us inside her thoughts, and the show respects that. Because she wasn’t the main character in the books, the writers have a fantastic foundation to work with for her spin-off. They can build on the character Child created without having to invent an inner life for her.
The show gave fans a preview of the upcoming spinoff by showing Frances Neagley independently eliminating threats. This not only gave Jack Reacher actor Alan Ritchson a break from being in every scene, but also prepared the audience to see Neagley operating on her own, without Reacher’s help.
The new series will focus entirely on Neagley’s own experiences, pushing her to her limits and allowing for significant character development. Because she doesn’t bottle up her feelings like Reacher, Neagley can openly share her reactions and how cases impact her through conversations, potentially leading to faster growth.
Audiences connect with Reacher because of his quiet strength, even when he speaks more. Neagley’s talkative personality is a welcome addition to the show and gives it a unique appeal. She’s such a compelling character that she could easily carry her own spin-off series.
The character has the potential to become even more well-known to readers if her own stories explore her personality beyond what’s shown in the Reacher books. With the right supporting characters, she could become as popular, or even more so, than Reacher himself.
Neagley Can Expand the Show’s Universe and Show Different Sides of Reacher
Reacher frequently points out that Neagley shares many of his own traits, even calling her intimidating. While she’s proven to be highly skilled and dangerous throughout the books, a separate series focusing on her allows viewers to truly appreciate just how much she embodies Reacher’s characteristics, while still remaining her own unique character.
The new series gives Neagley a chance to truly become the character she is in the books – no longer just a support for Reacher, but a fully developed person. It’s exciting to see how the show will explore her as the main character, and how Reacher’s influence might shape the story, potentially mirroring their established relationship.
Alternatively, the story could explore a different dynamic, with Reacher being the one to assist Neagley with a problem. This would be a welcome change from both the TV show and the books, as it naturally demonstrates Reacher’s feelings for Neagley through his actions rather than simply stating them.
This series is a welcome addition to the existing story world. Both main characters are compelling, whether you’re reading about them or watching them, and they’re strong enough to carry stories on their own or as a team. Interestingly, because the show isn’t based on a specific Lee Child book, the character of Neagley might actually be a more faithful representation of how the author originally envisioned her, with less focus on internal thoughts and more emphasis on action.
Honestly, if this show does as well as Reacher on Prime Video – and I’m really hoping it does! – I could see Lee Child writing a whole new series just focused on Neagley. She’s that compelling, and if the audience reacts like they did to Reacher, I think he’d have to!
