As a huge Colleen Hoover fan, I was really excited to see It Ends With Us do so well in theaters last year, even with all the behind-the-scenes stuff with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. Now I’m wondering if she can repeat that success! Her next book, Regretting You, is getting a movie adaptation coming out October 24, 2025, and early reviews are in. Critics have seen it and they’re definitely feeling strongly about how emotional and over-the-top the story is presented on screen.
The trailer for Regretting You introduces the complicated relationship between longtime friends Morgan (Allison Williams) and Jonah (Dave Franco), alongside the fast-moving romance between Morgan’s daughter, Clara (McKenna Grace), and one of Jonah’s students, Miller (Mason Thames). While Jacob Oller of AV Club gave the film a C-, he notes that its predictable plot points hint at intentional humor, making it more amusingly flawed than outright bad. Oller explains that the movie seems to be aware of its own clichés.
Regretting You is a sweeping love story that feels like a fairy tale, complete with dramatic moments and an intense focus on high school life – similar to a Taylor Swift song. The movie packs all the drama of an entire TV season into two hours. While it’s over-the-top, director Josh Boone, known for The Fault In Our Stars, sometimes seems aware of the silliness and plays into it, acknowledging the audience’s skepticism and the actors’ amusement rather than taking the story completely seriously.
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman notes that the film tries to replicate the success of It Ends with Us by using dramatic, soap opera-like elements to draw the audience into a complicated romance. However, unlike It Ends with Us, which he found genuinely surprising and emotionally impactful, he describes Regretting You as simply being overly sentimental and cliché. He went on to say…
Regretting You blends the drama of soap operas with young adult romance, offering a few intriguing moments but ultimately feeling overly sentimental. While the film features talented actors striving to elevate the story, the major plot twists feel predictable and silly. It will likely appeal to teenage audiences who enjoy a sweet, dramatic romance. However, viewers who enjoyed the more serious tone of ‘It Ends with Us’ might find ‘Regretting You’ more unintentionally funny than emotionally moving.
Richard Lawson at The Hollywood Reporter points out that casting actors in their thirties, like Dave Franco, to play teenagers in flashbacks in Regretting You immediately feels awkward. The movie struggles to strike the right balance between the characters’ sadness and the romantic storyline. Lawson suggests this could be the end of the trend of adapting Colleen Hoover novels into films.
The biggest problem with “Regretting You” is how predictable and uninspired it is. Its attempts to create romance and sadness feel slow and lacking in imagination. With its overly sweet and picturesque North Carolina setting and overly sentimental music, the film unfortunately reminds you of the movies made by Nicholas Sparks. Ultimately, “Regretting You” feels just as emotionally messy and unoriginal as those films, and it wastes any potential it had to be something special.
In a review for USA TODAY, Brian Truitt likened the film to a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, noting Colleen Hoover seems determined to evoke maximum emotion from viewers. He found the story focusing on the adult characters to be overly dramatic and unpleasant, and felt Allison Williams’ acting wasn’t utilized well. However, the storyline centered around the teenage characters redeemed the movie somewhat. Truitt gave it a rating of 2.5 out of 4 stars.
Grace and Thames have incredible chemistry, making them a joy to watch together and almost overshadowing the adult characters – with the wonderful Clancy Brown as Miller’s grandpa being a notable exception. While the movie hits familiar teen romance beats, their connection elevates everything. They feel like a classic rom-com couple, and their romance feels truly authentic amidst all the sugary sweetness.
Damon Wise, writing for Deadline, shares the opinion of many critics that the movie’s tone is inconsistent. He describes it as feeling like a sentimental Hallmark movie, but with surprisingly cynical humor, and praises the actors for delivering their lines convincingly despite this odd mix.
You’ll spend a good two hours completely lost and confused, questioning the plot and your own sanity. The film’s title is perfectly fitting – unless you enjoy overly dramatic stories like Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us. Regretting You is just as ridiculous and over-the-top, but it’s mixed with odd, funny moments that make you wonder if it’s actually a strange, overblown joke – a parody of romance novels themselves.
I’ve seen some pretty harsh reviews of Regretting You, and a lot of people are saying it doesn’t live up to It Ends with Us. They’re saying the movie is all over the place with its tone, a bit too dramatic, and even unintentionally funny at times. But honestly, the actors are amazing, so I still think it’s worth checking out! It comes out this Friday, October 24th, and I’m planning to see it!
