Rami Malek, who starred as Elliot Alderson in the popular USA Network thriller Mr. Robot, recently discussed the possibility of returning for a sequel or spinoff six years after the show ended. Elliot was a complex character – a cybersecurity engineer by day and a hacker involved with the group fsociety by night.
The final episode of Mr. Robot, released on December 22, 2019, is often ranked as one of the show’s greatest. It received a 9.8/10 rating on IMDb, and the fourth and final season earned high praise overall, with a 98% approval rating from critics and a 94% rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
During a recent film event, Rami Malek, while discussing his new movie Nuremberg, was asked if he’d reprise his role in a potential Mr. Robot sequel or spinoff. He firmly stated he wouldn’t, but did mention he and the show’s creator, Sam Esmail, are planning to collaborate on a different project. Esmail was the driving force behind Mr. Robot, creating, running, and directing the majority of the show.
It’s not surprising Malek feels good about the show’s ending – it wasn’t canceled, but concluded as the creator, Esmail, intended. The finale was well-received by both critics and viewers, and it successfully wrapped up most of the characters’ stories.
The possibility of Esmail and Malek collaborating again is exciting news. Since Mr. Robot concluded, both have been focused on other projects. Malek has taken on diverse roles, including a villain in the James Bond film No Time to Die (2021), a scientist in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023), and an action lead in The Amateur (2025). He most recently played U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley in Nuremberg (2025).
I was really fascinated to discover that Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot, has continued to build on that world! His recent film, Leave the World Behind on Netflix, is full of little nods and connections to Mr. Robot, which I loved spotting. He’s even said that both stories actually take place in the same universe – it’s amazing to me how he’s expanded on that original vision!
Like Esmail’s previous film, a future project with Malek might exist within the same world as Mr. Robot, including hidden references without being a direct continuation of the story. While they’re only discussing a potential collaboration now, a new movie or show is likely a ways off, but Malek’s comments are encouraging for fans of their work together.
