Rain Man Is Available to Stream for Free

I remember when this actor was really bouncing around early in his career – he did everything! He was in thrillers like Taps, silly comedies like Losin’ It, even sports movies (All the Right Moves) and fantasy flicks like Legend. But honestly, Rain Man was the one that really launched him into the stratosphere. It made him a huge dramatic star in the ’90s, and if you want to check it out, it’s actually streaming on Tubi right now, for free!

The classic film Rain Man has been available to watch for free on Tubi since January 1st. Directed by Barry Levinson, the movie stars Tom Cruise as Charlie, a self-centered businessman who learns about his father’s death and the existence of his brother, Raymond – a brilliant autistic savant. Raymond inherited a large fortune, which Charlie didn’t know about. Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for his performance as Raymond.

I remember when Rain Man came out in December 1988 – everyone was talking about it! It was a huge hit with both critics and audiences. In fact, it ended up being the top-grossing film of the entire year. What’s really amazing is that it only cost around $25 million to make, but it went on to earn somewhere between $354 and $429.4 million worldwide – a truly incredible success story.

Critics loved the performances from Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, along with Barry Levinson’s direction, the film’s script, music, and visuals, and its sensitive depiction of autism. Many consider Rain Man a classic of 1980s cinema and one of Tom Cruise’s best films. The movie won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman.

Rain Man Turned Tom Cruise Into a Serious Actor

Following his role in Rain Man, Tom Cruise primarily starred in serious, dramatic films for the next ten years. He led critically successful movies like Born on the Fourth of July, Days of Thunder, A Few Good Men, The Firm, and Jerry Maguire. Cruise earned Best Actor nominations from the Academy for his performances in Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Magnolia in 1999.

Towards the end of the 1990s, Tom Cruise started exploring roles outside of drama, most famously with the film Mission: Impossible. Based on the 1966 TV show, Mission: Impossible was a huge success in theaters, and led to seven more films being made between 2000 and 2025. The franchise helped redefine Cruise’s career, turning him into an action movie star known for his incredible and daring stunts.

Although Tom Cruise has occasionally appeared in dramatic roles since 2000, he’s become best known for his action films. Beyond the popular Mission: Impossible series, he’s starred in action hits like Collateral and Edge of Tomorrow. His next movie is coming to theaters this October.

Rain Man is available to stream on Tubi.
