Nine years after the release of Girls Trip, producer Will Packer recently shared exciting news about a potential sequel.
In a recent interview with Deadline, producer Will Packer shared exciting news about Girls Trip 2. He said the creative team is closer than ever to starting the sequel, now that the script is complete. Packer also confirmed the script has been sent to the cast for their review, signaling the project is moving forward.
The sequel has been a long time coming because the creators want to make sure it’s perfect, putting a lot of effort and attention into the process. They’ve stated they’d prefer not to make Girls Trip 2 at all rather than release something that doesn’t meet their standards.
Packer hasn’t revealed when the sequel will be released, but he wants fans to know he’s diligently working on it, as it’s the project he receives the most questions about.
I’m optimistic about how things are progressing. We’ve made more progress on this project than ever before, and I’ve always believed it’s better to do something right or not at all. We’ve put a lot of effort into developing the story and we’re really happy with the current script. We’ve shared it with the cast – we all stay connected in a really funny group chat run by Tiffany Haddish, who definitely keeps things lively! While I can’t announce a release date just yet, I’m working on it consistently because it’s what fans ask me about the most.
Following the success of Girls Trip, Will Packer produced a variety of popular shows and films, including Being Mary Jane, Night School, What Men Want, Little, and Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist. His latest project, the romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany, will be released in theaters on April 10th.
He was also the producer of the 94th Academy Awards, which was hosted by Regina Hall, known for her role in Girls Trip, along with Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes.
The movie Girls Trip featured a talented ensemble cast, including Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mike Colter, Larenz Tate, Kate Walsh, Mike Epps, Kofi Siriboe, Deborah Ayorinde, Lara Grice, and Tonea Stewart.
The movie follows a group of friends who’ve grown distant over time. Ryan Pierce, played by Hall, brings them back together for a reunion at the Essence Music Festival. The film’s soundtrack includes hits from artists like Maxwell, Ne-Yo, New Edition, Missy Elliott, and Aretha Franklin.
Released in theaters in July 2027, Girls Trip earned $140 million worldwide on a budget of just $19 million. In the United States, the movie made $115 million, becoming the first film led by Black actors and created by a Black writing, directing, and producing team to reach $100 million in earnings.
The movie Girls Trip was a hit with both audiences and critics. Written by the creators of Black-ish and First Wives Club, Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver, it earned a 91% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film Girls Trip received two awards at the NAACP Image Awards: Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Tiffany Haddish. Haddish was also recognized at the Black Reel Awards, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress and the award for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance by a Female.
Following the huge popularity of the first movie, a sequel to Girls Trip has been frequently discussed, with many of the original actors saying they’d like to participate. In 2024, producer Will Packer announced that Malcolm D. Lee would return to direct, and in 2025, he confirmed that Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah were all signed on to star.
