Sony is raising the price of the PlayStation 5 Pro and PlayStation Portal in the US, Europe, the UK, and Japan. This increase is happening because of continued problems getting enough hardware components, and the increasing cost of things like RAM and memory.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed something frustrating lately – console prices are going up! Even though the Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch have been out for a while now, Microsoft has raised the price of their consoles a few times. Nintendo’s only adjusted the price of the original Switch so far, and thankfully, they haven’t touched the price of the new Switch 2 yet.
PlayStation 5/Pro/Portal Prices Are Going Way Up Worldwide
PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal prices are going up in major markets, according to a recent announcement on the official PlayStation website. The company says this is due to the current global economic situation, but the real reason is a shortage of tech components – particularly RAM – which is becoming more expensive because companies are buying it up for AI data centers.
The new prices for the PlayStation line of systems are:
U.S.
- PS5 – $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
- PS5 Pro – $899.99
U.K.
- PS5 – £569.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99
- PS5 Pro – £789.99
Europe
- PS5 – €649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – €599.99
- PS5 Pro – €899.99
Japan
- PS5 – ¥97,980
- PS5 Digital Edition – ¥89,980
- PS5 Pro – ¥137,980
PlayStation fans are upset about a price hike for the PS5 Pro. The new version will cost $699, which is $200 more than the original launch price. This news comes after another recent announcement that also received a lot of negative reactions.
What Will The PlayStation 6 Cost?
In 2026, the PlayStation 5 will be six years old, leading many to wonder what Sony’s next console might be. While a PlayStation 6 seemed likely in the past, the current gaming market doesn’t require Sony to release a new system right away.
The Xbox brand has been struggling lately, largely because Microsoft has been releasing games previously exclusive to Xbox on other platforms. While Microsoft is teasing its next console, Project Helix, many gamers are skeptical. With no exclusive titles and the system appearing to be just a powerful gaming PC, it’s unclear if anyone is excited about it.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is now available, but it’s aimed at a different type of gamer than the PlayStation. Many people actually own both a PlayStation for home gaming and a Nintendo Switch for playing on the go.
Considering how the market looks right now and the fact that there aren’t many competing consoles, Sony might want to hold off on announcing the PlayStation 6. If a standard PlayStation 5 costs $650, it’s reasonable to wonder how much a more powerful version will cost, even if Sony helps to lower the price for customers.
