Andy Weir, the author of the hit science fiction novel and movie Project Hail Mary, has apologized for harsh comments he made about the current Star Trek series. He publicly apologized to executive producer Alex Kurtzman after calling recent Trek shows “terrible” during a podcast interview.
Andy Weir issues an apology to Star Trek EP Alex Kurtzman
Andy Weir publicly apologized to Alex Kurtzman on Facebook. He explained that a recent podcast interview on Critical Drinker didn’t go as planned and that his comments were twisted into sensationalized clips. Weir hoped Kurtzman had also seen the parts of the interview where he expressed his genuine liking for Kurtzman as a person, as well as his enjoyment of Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks.
The author explained he was aiming for humor during the interview, but now realizes his comments came across as disrespectful and unkind, and he apologized. He also clarified that his frustrated comment about a rejected idea – “they didn’t like my pitch so f— ’em!” – was meant as a joke about himself, not a display of real anger.
During the podcast recording, he gave positive reviews to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, calling it “pretty good,” and Star Trek: Lower Decks, describing it as “entertaining and fun.” However, he was much more critical of other recent Star Trek series, stating, “I don’t like a lot of the new Trek,” and using strong language to express his disapproval. He also shared that Paramount had rejected a Star Trek idea he proposed, adding a dismissive comment about their decision.
Despite his apology, the author of Project Hail Mary offered to discuss the issue further. He said he was open to a phone call or video chat, even if people just wanted to express their criticism. He also joked that the situation would likely be forgotten once he released his next novel in a few months.
