Just got word from Amazon MGM Studios about the runtime for Ryan Gosling’s upcoming sci-fi flick, Project Hail Mary, and it’s a hefty one! Clocking in at 2 hours and 36 minutes, this space adventure is definitely aiming for epic status. Apparently, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller really needed the time to do justice to Andy Weir’s bestselling novel – it’s actually 15 minutes longer than The Martian, which, as you might remember, also starred a certain Matt Damon! Looks like we’re in for a long, but hopefully rewarding, journey when it hits theaters in March.
There was some initial confusion about how long the movie Project Hail Mary is. A theater listing first showed a runtime of 2 hours and 46 minutes, sparking discussion about how long movies should be. However, that listing was quickly changed to 1 hour and 35 minutes – a much shorter time. Amazon MGM and the movie’s co-director, Phil Lord, have now confirmed the 1 hour and 35 minute runtime includes the credits.
The final cut of Project Hail Mary clocks in at just under the length that was initially reported and sparked a lot of debate. It seems like a good compromise: it’s longer than many movies in its genre (most are 90 minutes or less), but it doesn’t quite reach three hours. This length is typical for big-budget films – in fact, eight out of ten of the highest-grossing movies ever made are over two hours long, with animated films like Zootopia 2 and Inside Out 2 being some of the exceptions.
