The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomday, will have a complex story, and a major part of that will be the inclusion of the X-Men. Marvel Studios has been gradually adding X-Men characters since obtaining the rights from Fox. We saw this begin with a cameo by Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film will prominently feature two mutant characters.
The next Avengers movie will more fully include mutants alongside the other heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios has been releasing teasers for the film, and the third one specifically highlighted the X-Men’s part in the story. Though short, the teaser confirms that Professor X and Magneto will team up again. Their relationship is legendary in the world of comics, often compared to the dynamic between Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the civil rights movement. In the comics, Professor X and Magneto often disagree about the best path forward for mutants, but they’ve always been able to put aside their differences when necessary to work together.
Magneto Teams Up With the X-Men in the Original Secret Wars
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is building towards a major event called Secret Wars, a popular storyline from Marvel comics that has happened twice before. It’s expected that the story will feature Magneto joining forces with the X-Men.
Magneto Works With Professor X To Take Down William Stryker
X2: X-Men United is still considered a highlight of the X-Men film series, drawing inspiration from a famous 1982 graphic novel by Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson. In that story, Magneto and Professor X are forced to team up when a dangerous man named William Stryker and his group, the Purifiers, begin hunting and killing mutants. Just as in the movie, Stryker’s actions push Magneto and the X-Men to form an uneasy alliance to protect all mutants.
Though both Magneto and Xavier want to stop Stryker, they disagree on the best approach, with Magneto initially believing Stryker should be killed. During one pivotal moment, Magneto saves Xavier’s life and has the opportunity to kill Stryker, but he chooses to heed Xavier’s plea for mercy and spare him. Even now, X-Men remains a prime illustration of their complicated relationship.
Magneto Temporarily Leads the X-Men for Xavier After the Mutant Massacre
In 1986, a team of villains led by Mister Sinister, known as the Marauders, murdered hundreds of Morlocks – mutants who were considered outcasts and lived in tunnels beneath New York City. At the time, Magneto was running Xavier’s school for mutants and joined forces with the X-Men to deal with this devastating attack.
With Professor X recovering in space, Magneto temporarily leading the X-Men highlights their ongoing partnership and shared commitment to protecting mutants. Although Magneto realizes he can’t truly fill Professor X’s shoes, his heroic actions reveal the complex and fascinating nature of his character.
Professor X and Magneto Destroy Weapon X in Ultimate X-Men
Marvel’s Ultimate line offered fresh takes on classic characters, including Spider-Man and the X-Men. The X-Men title, in particular, explored a more complex and intense rivalry between Professor X and Magneto. Instead of forming the X-Men as fans knew them, they created a different team altogether. Notably, Professor X was even prepared to subtly control Magneto to strengthen their connection.
Professor X and Magneto’s teams join forces to stop Weapon X, a dangerous organization trying to exploit mutants. After Weapon X captures the X-Men, it’s Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants who come to their aid. Working together with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D., they manage to free the captured mutants.
Magneto Takes Over the X-Men From Xavier in the Animated Series Revival
As a huge fan of the X-Men, I always thought the animated series was the best take on the whole mutant story, and honestly, what Marvel Studios is doing now feels like a perfect continuation of that. One of the things I loved about the original cartoon was seeing Magneto and Professor X actually work together – especially in storylines like ‘Savage Land,’ ‘Beyond Good and Evil,’ and ‘The Phalanx Covenant.’ It was amazing seeing Magneto put aside his usual world-domination plans to genuinely try and save Charles’ life. It really showed a different side to him.
X-Men ’97 continues the story with Magneto seizing control of Xavier’s school and the X-Men team. Initially, Magneto attempts to fulfill Xavier’s vision of peace between humans and mutants. However, the devastating genocide in Genosha leads him to believe that humanity is beyond redemption, and he plans to destroy the Earth with an asteroid. The show cleverly flips Xavier’s ideals, with Magneto trying to achieve them, only to be met with further human failings.
Magneto Carries On Xavier’s Legacy in Age of Apocalypse
As a huge comic book fan, I always thought “Age of Apocalypse” was a really pivotal story – it basically throws everything you know about the X-Men into a completely different reality. It’s interesting because, unlike the 2016 movie which kind of borrowed from it, Charles and Erik aren’t directly teaming up here. But, surprisingly, their actions still end up working towards the same thing. The whole thing kicks off with a really dramatic moment: Xavier actually sacrifices himself to save Magneto from an attack by Magneto’s own son, Legion, who travels back in time specifically to kill his father.
When Xavier makes a great sacrifice, history changes. Magneto ends up creating the X-Men and embracing Xavier’s beliefs about mutant-human relations. But this new world gives the powerful, ancient mutant Apocalypse the chance to begin a massive attack on humans and conquer North America. Instead of working with Xavier, Magneto takes on Xavier’s former leadership role, and Bishop must travel back in time to fix everything before it’s too late.
Professor X and Magneto Try To Rebuild Genosha
In New X-Men #115, Charles Xavier’s twin sister, Casandra Nova, launches an attack on Genosha using Sentinels, an event mirrored in X-Men ’97. Afterwards, Professor X discovers Magneto buried alive, as depicted in Excalibur #1 (2004).
Magneto and Xavier put aside their disagreements again, understanding how crucial Genosha was for the future of mutants.
Charles and Erik Unite To Form the X-Men in First Class
The X-Men movies started in the early 2000s with Professor X and Magneto already established as rivals. But in the first film, they briefly teamed up with the rest of the mutant group to defeat a common enemy, Sebastian Shaw.
In X-Men: First Class, we see Charles and Erik collaborate more closely than in any other live-action film. The movie culminates in Erik killing Shaw and becoming Magneto, leading to the creation of the Brotherhood of Mutants. However, the heart of X-Men: First Class remains the dynamic between Charles and Erik, beautifully showcasing their differing beliefs and the incredible potential they have when they unite.
Days of Future Past Causes Charles and Erik To Stop Mutant Genocide
“Days of Future Past” is a popular story that has been retold in both animated and live-action films. The story centers around a team of mutants who must join forces when a dangerous new enemy, the Sentinels, threatens to wipe out their kind.
The story centers on a time travel mission to prevent a murder that would lead to a bleak future for mutants. This forces Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr to team up. The original comic book storyline involves Kitty Pryde traveling back in time to stop Mystique from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. However, the 2014 film adaptation changes this, sending Wolverine back to prevent Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask instead.
Professor X and Magneto Rule Krakoa Together
As a huge comic book and movie fan, I was really blown away by Jonathan Hickman’s House of X and Powers of X. It’s a fascinating take on Professor X and Magneto, finally showing them truly working together – not just teaming up to fight a bad guy, but actually building something lasting. They’ve created a brand new, secure home for mutants, and the best part is seeing how they reconcile their very different visions for leading their people. It’s a really clever and hopeful take on the mutant story.
Xavier accepts that mutants and humans may need to live apart, while Magneto understands the power of working together. The island of Krakoa shows what they can achieve when they respect each other’s ideas, creating a safe and thriving home for mutants.
