Prison Break Is Officially Leaving Netflix Ahead of Upcoming Reboot

Okay, so this is a bummer for anyone who loves a good drama – the show everyone agrees is the best prison series ever is leaving Netflix soon. Like, in just a few days, it won’t be available to stream there anymore. I’m definitely going to miss it!

The popular series Prison Break will no longer be available on Netflix after January 29th, so fans have just a few days left to watch it there. Luckily, all five seasons will continue to stream on both Hulu and Disney+. Since Disney owns the network that originally aired the show (Fox), it’s expected to remain on those platforms for the foreseeable future.

The show Prison Break first aired from 2005 to 2009, running for four seasons and concluding in 2009. However, it unexpectedly returned in 2017 with a nine-episode fifth season intended as a full revival. Although a sixth season was initially announced, it was ultimately canceled. Now, Hulu has confirmed a new season is in development, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

The show has remained popular on streaming platforms for years, actually growing its audience long after its initial release. This is likely why Hulu is rebooting the series, hoping to attract a new generation of Prison Break fans.

What to Expect From the Prison Break Reboot

Even with all the online excitement, the new Prison Break series won’t satisfy everyone. Hulu hasn’t shared many details, but they’ve confirmed it will feature a completely new story and cast. This means Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell, who became fan favorites during the original series and later worked together again, won’t be returning to their famous roles.

It doesn’t look like we’ll see any of the original stars – like Sarah Wayne Callies, Peter Stormare, or Jodi Lyn O’Keefe – return for the new series. The focus appears to be on introducing entirely new characters and stories, rather than continuing old ones. However, the reboot will still take place in the same world as the original Prison Break, so future appearances from familiar faces haven’t been ruled out.

Hulu hasn’t revealed many details about the new Prison Break series, but it will likely follow a similar storyline to the original’s first season – a daring escape from prison. This approach builds on the success the creators had with their other spin-off, Mayans M.C.

The upcoming new season of Prison Break is adding several new faces to the cast as series regulars: Emily Browning, Lukas Gage, Drake Rodger, JR Bourne, Georgie Flores, Clayton Cardenas, and Myles Bullock. Details about their characters haven’t been released yet. The season will also feature guest appearances by Donal Logue, Lili Taylor, Ray McKinnon, and Margo Martindale.

A new version of Prison Break is in the works, but there’s no confirmed release date yet. Updates will be shared as the show is developed. With a showrunner and a clear vision, production is expected to progress smoothly, and a late 2026 release is a possibility. In the meantime, fans can still rewatch the original Prison Break, though it’s no longer available on Netflix.

Prison Break is still available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
