‘Primitive War’ Dinosaur Action Sequel Confirmed

The action-horror film Primitive War is getting a sequel. The original movie followed a group of soldiers in Vietnam who were sent to find a lost squad, but instead encountered an increasing number of dangerous dinosaurs. The films are based on a series of books by author Ethan Pettus, who has said:

“I had a blast watching the first Primitive War film, and I’m excited to see how the sequel goes!”

Luke Sparke will be back to write, direct, and produce Primitive War 2. He also handled editing, production design, and visual effects on the original film, and the same production team is returning for the sequel. According to Variety, Primitive War 2 is currently being developed, with plans to release it around 2027. Sparke says the new film will be bigger and more intense than the first.

The first movie focused on initial discovery. This one explores what happens when things spiral out of control – when nature evolves quicker than our strategies, and the conflict fades in importance compared to the consequences that have been set in motion.

The upcoming film, Primitive War 2, will center around a new group of soldiers. This means characters from the first movie, such as Ryan Kwanten’s Baker, probably won’t be the main characters this time. Along with the announcement, a poster was released, and the film is officially described as delivering both realistic military action and intense survival horror.

Primitive War 2 takes the story and world of the first film even further, plunging into the heart of the Vietnam War where soldiers face not only each other, but also terrifying prehistoric creatures. This sequel is a grittier, more intense experience, offering a realistic and frightening look at war and survival. Following the events of the first film, Primitive War 2 centers on a new American platoon sent into a dangerous and chaotic valley. They quickly find themselves caught between enemy fire, competing predators, and hidden Cold War schemes. As the situation spirals out of control, the soldiers must fight for their lives, and the consequences of failure could be devastating.

Dinosaurs Are Box Office Behemoths

Sparke Films

The initial film, Primitive War, didn’t play in many theaters and earned around $1.2 million globally. While that’s not a huge amount considering its $7 million production cost, the film made extra money through online rentals and purchases, and has gained a dedicated following due to its unusual combination of genres. Now, Primitive War is positioned to do even better, potentially earning much more if it gets wider distribution.

The Jurassic World films have consistently shown that dinosaur action movies can be huge successes at the box office. Even though Jurassic World Rebirth, released in 2025, received mixed reviews, it still earned $869 million worldwide. The three Jurassic World movies before it each made over $1 billion, despite not being critically acclaimed, particularly the later installments.

Although Primitive War 2 probably won’t be as big a hit as the Jurassic World films, it offers a fresh, more intense option for dinosaur movie fans. Because the first Primitive War found an audience through video-on-demand and streaming, the sequel has the potential for a much broader theatrical release and could become a significant box office success.
