I’m really enjoying what Amazon Prime Video is putting out lately – they consistently have new original movies that everyone seems to be talking about. Their newest one is especially interesting. It’s an action movie, which usually hooks me right away, but this one has a really cool twist: it’s all about ballerinas!
While it might seem similar to other action films, especially with the upcoming From the World of John Wick: Ballerina in 2025, Pretty Lethal takes a unique approach. Instead of focusing on a professional killer, it’s about a group of teenagers. It’s definitely a film you should check out.
Pretty Lethal Is An Action Movie About Ballerinas
The plot of Pretty Lethal is simple, but definitely unusual. It centers around a ballet company whose dancers have complicated relationships with one another. While traveling to an important competition, their bus breaks down in a storm, and they’re forced to seek refuge at a local inn.
When they arrive, the women discover the hotel is actually a front for a torture operation, immediately putting themselves in serious danger. They unite to fight back, and the film delivers exciting action thanks to their unexpectedly fierce resistance.
Throughout their journey, the girls—despite their differences—mostly resolve their conflicts and become a close-knit team.
The Action Sequences In Pretty Lethal Are Very Creative
The real appeal of Pretty Lethal lies in its well-designed action scenes. Director Vicky Jewson, known for her work on the 2019 Netflix film Close, brings a stylish touch to every action sequence.
Because of the storm, the girls’ clothes are soaked, so they have to wear their ballet tutus everywhere. They team up and surprisingly use their years of ballet training to fight off some dangerous men.
The movie isn’t necessarily logical, and that’s okay! It’s pure fun, and watching the characters use ballet moves in exciting action scenes is really enjoyable. The filmmakers cleverly integrate ballet into everything, making it a central part of the experience.
As a film lover, I found it really clever how the ballet sequences, with all their emphasis on working together, mirrored the story’s central theme of connection. It didn’t matter where these women came from, what they thought, or even if they initially liked each other – facing danger and relying on each other to survive truly brought them together. It was a beautiful way to show their bond forming.
The Cast Of Pretty Lethal Is Impressive
Everyone in Pretty Lethal delivers a strong performance, both the young performers and the bad guys. While the movie doesn’t have one obvious main character, Maddie Ziegler as Bones stands out. She’s the one who really unites the group, and she’s also proven her talent in films like The Fallout and My Old Ass.
Lana Condor, known for her roles in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movies, takes on a different kind of character as the snobby Princess. It’s a surprising choice, as she usually plays sweet and kind characters. Avantika, who was a standout in the 2023 Mean Girls film, brings a lot of energy to the role of the devout Grace.
Zoe and Chloe, two members of the performing group, are sisters in real life. Rising star Iris Apatow plays Zoe, and Millicent Simmonds, known for her roles in A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II, plays Chloe.
Uma Thurman, best known for her roles in classics like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, is the biggest star in the movie. She plays Devora Kasimer, who owns the inn, and her presence as an action movie icon really helps Pretty Lethal stand out.
