Prime Video currently offers the largest movie library of any major streaming service, with over 20,000 films to choose from. This includes a wide selection of comedies, so you’re sure to find something to make you laugh. With so many options, and comedies often blending with other genres, it can be hard to know where to start.
Movies like Forrest Gump blend humor and drama, but we were specifically searching for films where comedy takes center stage. We wanted movies that prioritize making you laugh, and Prime Video delivers some excellent choices in that regard.
Uptown Girls (2003)
Sometimes a movie gets poor reviews when it’s first released, but then gains a dedicated following over the years. Uptown Girls is a good example of this – it only received a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes when it came out.
Over time, Uptown Girls has become more popular with audiences, currently earning a 61% rating. The movie tells the story of a woman who unexpectedly has to work as a babysitter after her financial support is cut off, and the bond she forms with the young girl, Lorraine, she looks after.
The movie’s story isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s saved by the fantastic performances of its lead actresses. Brittany Murphy is funny and captivating as Molly, and Dakota Fanning is excellent as Lorraine. Their chemistry is incredible, and they share some truly memorable scenes.
Dear White People (2014)
While the 2014 film Dear White People started it all, the television show based on it has become much more well-known. Created by Justin Simien, who was making his directorial debut, Dear White People offers a unique take on comedy.
Rather than being silly or overly cute, the movie deals with important and serious issues while still managing to be funny. Dear White People centers around the growing racial conflicts at an elite Ivy League university.
The movie received excellent reviews, largely due to its strong cast and clever writing. The cast is particularly impressive, including Tessa Thompson, Tyler James Williams, and Teyonah Parris, among others.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)
The Lonely Island is famous for being hilarious. They’ve created some of the most iconic funny songs and sketches on Saturday Night Live, but their movie, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, could be their greatest achievement.
The film centers on Conner Friel, a musician who launched a solo career after leaving his band, “The Style Boyz,” with his close friends. Facing challenges as a solo artist, he reconnects with his former bandmates to rediscover his passion and musical foundation.
The film’s documentary-style structure enhances its humor. It stars many former cast members from Saturday Night Live, and includes fun appearances by celebrities like Emma Stone, Usher, and Rihanna. Though it wasn’t a success in theaters, it has since gained a dedicated following as a cult classic.
Dope (2015)
Looking back, Dope remains a fascinating film. Director Rick Famuyiwa, now well-known for his contributions to Star Wars series like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, first gained recognition with this independent movie.
The movie also stars up-and-coming actors who were just starting to gain recognition, including Shameik Moore, Kiersey Clemons, and Tony Revolori. It’s fun to see them early in their careers, and all three deliver great comedic performances that make this over-the-top story really enjoyable.
Dope tells the story of three friends trying to break out of their comfort zones and experience life beyond their nerdy reputations. While it’s not the funniest movie you’ll find, it’s a surprisingly insightful and realistic portrayal of growing up.
The Big Sick (2017)
Most romantic comedies aren’t based on real life, which makes The Big Sick special. The movie is written by and stars Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani, a married couple, and it’s inspired by their own love story.
Kumail Nanjiani plays a character based on himself who begins a relationship with Emily (Zoe Kazan). They break up right before Emily falls ill and enters a medically induced coma. Kumail is then pressured to sign a medical release form, mistakenly believed to be her husband.
The movie focuses on Kumail’s relationship with his in-laws as his girlfriend battles a serious illness, and what happens when she finally recovers. While it’s a unique take on the romantic comedy genre, it’s still very funny and even earned an Academy Award nomination for its original screenplay.
The Naked Gun (2025)
When it comes to jokes, The Naked Gun might be the fastest-paced comedy ever. The new film, a continuation of the classic Leslie Nielsen series from the 80s and 90s, is packed with non-stop gags, aiming for a laugh almost every minute.
Even during simple conversations, The Naked Gun manages to sneak in a visual joke somewhere in the scene. This constant humor is what really sets it apart from many other comedies today.
Liam Neeson wasn’t an obvious pick for a comedy, but he’s surprisingly great and fully committed to the role. The rest of the cast, including Pamela Anderson, are equally strong, resulting in one of the funniest and most entertaining action comedies we’ve seen in a while.
Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1975)
When people talk about the best comedy movies ever made, Monty Python and the Holy Grail always seems to be mentioned. The Monty Python team is incredibly famous, and many consider this film to be their finest work.
Between seasons of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, the creators made this film, a humorous take on the classic story of King Arthur and his search for the Holy Grail.
As a huge movie fan, I think Monty Python and the Holy Grail is easily one of the funniest and most influential parody films ever made. It’s a classic! Seriously, with a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a lot of people agree it’s not just a great comedy, but the greatest British comedy film of all time.
Fargo (1996)
The Coen Brothers have made many memorable films, but many consider Fargo to be their best. It’s a classic crime comedy with some truly unforgettable and quirky characters.
The movie Fargo revolves around a car salesman who makes a desperate plan: he hires two inept criminals to kidnap his wife, hoping her wealthy father will pay a ransom. Predictably, the scheme falls apart, and the investigation led by police chief Marge Gunderson only complicates things further.
Frances McDormand received the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Marge, and the Coen brothers won for Best Original Screenplay. Fargo was nominated for a total of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, highlighting its critical acclaim.
Shrek (2001)
When Shrek came out, it was a breath of fresh air. Disney had been the leader in animated movies for years, but DreamWorks created something completely original that quickly became popular. It stood out by playfully poking fun at the classic fairy tales Disney was famous for.
The movie centers around Shrek, an ogre who reluctantly agrees to rescue a princess for a demanding lord in exchange for the fairy tale creatures who’ve been exiled to his swamp. During his journey, Shrek makes friends with Donkey and unexpectedly falls in love with the princess, who harbors a secret: she’s also an ogre.
The voice acting is fantastic, especially Eddie Murphy as the incredibly funny Donkey. “Shrek” was groundbreaking as the first animated film to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and it remains a very enjoyable movie even now.
Superbad (2007)
Superbad is often considered the best example of a wild and funny teen comedy. The story itself is a familiar one: three clumsy high schoolers attempt to have an unforgettable, and potentially scandalous, last night of fun before heading off to college, including their efforts to lose their virginity.
What makes Superbad so hilarious is how unpredictable it is. Everything goes wrong in the funniest ways – from a ridiculously fake ID with the name ‘McLovin’ to chaotic encounters with the police and even an awkward performance for a group of people using drugs. Nothing goes according to plan, and that’s what makes it great.
This movie is a hilarious comedy with a fantastic cast. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera are excellent in the leading roles, Emma Stone is a standout in her first major film appearance, and Bill Hader and Seth Rogen are particularly funny as the police officers – and that’s just a glimpse of the talent on display.
