Prime Video’s ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Saved the Fantasy Genre After ‘Game of Thrones’ Flopped

Fantasy TV shows are in a strange place right now. Despite high expectations, adaptations of popular books like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, and Shadow and Bone haven’t quite resonated with fans. However, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a spin-off of Game of Thrones, has helped to redeem the franchise after the controversial final season. While many big fantasy properties struggle to succeed on television, one franchise is consistently keeping the genre thriving.

Looking for a truly captivating high-fantasy world filled with diverse races, magic, and an epic story? Prime Video has you covered – and we’re not talking about The Rings of Power or The Wheel of Time. Their 2022 fantasy series was a massive hit, earning perfect scores from critics (100% on Rotten Tomatoes) and quickly getting renewed for two additional seasons, with a fourth already planned. The show’s popularity has even led to a spin-off series, which also received a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Both The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein are animated series that bring the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons to life – specifically, they’re based on actual game campaigns played by the live-streaming group Critical Role. This group is made up of well-known voice actors like Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Taliesin Jaffe, Liam O’Brien, and Emmy award-winner Sam Riegel.

‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Is as Epic as Epic Fantasy Gets

Animation offers incredible freedom – filmmakers can create any setting or action without drastically increasing costs. This allowed The Legend of Vox Machina to faithfully adapt its epic, world-threatening story from the original Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The show centers on Vox Machina, a diverse group of heroes who repeatedly rise to the challenge of saving the world from powerful enemies like a cruel vampire warlord, a dangerous group of dragons, and other formidable threats.

Following the events of the first story, The Mighty Nein explores the second campaign from Critical Role. This new group of adventurers is a bit rougher around the edges than the previous heroes. They’re a band of criminals and outcasts who, like many fantasy heroes, must save the world. However, they’re even less prepared than their predecessors, each carrying their own baggage and unique personality quirks into the adventure.

Will Critical Role’s 3rd Campaign Get a TV Adaptation?

Even though the animated series for The Legend of Vox Machina and The Might Nein are still ongoing, fans are already eager for an adaptation of the third Dungeons & Dragons campaign. That campaign wrapped up in 2025, and Critical Role is currently playing its fourth. While Prime Video and Critical Role haven’t officially announced a show about the third campaign’s team, known as Bells Hells, the huge popularity of the previous adaptations makes it very likely to happen eventually.
