Prime Video’s Scarpetta Is The Perfect Dexter Antithesis

Prime Video’s new 8-part crime thriller is a fascinating contrast to the show Dexter. Although it’s unique and brings a lot to the crime thriller genre, it intentionally subverts many of the storytelling choices made in Dexter.

Prime Video is adding another crime thriller to its already extensive collection, this time based on a well-known book series. While it hasn’t received the same high praise as hits like Reacher and Bosch, the new show demonstrates Prime Video’s willingness to try new things within the genre, rather than simply repeating familiar storylines.

It’s too early to say if this show will be successful enough for future seasons, but it should appeal to fans of Dexter. It’s not a direct copy of the 2006 series, but it offers a fresh and interesting take on similar themes.

Scarpetta & Dexter Are Two Sides Of The Same Coin

Prime Video has created a series based on Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels. Interestingly, the show and the books have a lot in common with Dexter. Both Scarpetta and Dexter feature characters with a strong understanding of what happens after death and a particular fascination with corpses.

Kay Scarpetta is a highly skilled forensic pathologist, and Dexter Morgan analyzes blood spatter patterns. Despite both being experts, they use their knowledge for very different reasons.

Scarpetta solves crimes by carefully examining bodies and ensuring criminals are brought to justice. Dexter, however, leads a secret life and uses his skills to satisfy his own dangerous urges.

I’ve always been fascinated by characters who think they’re doing the right thing, and both of these shows have them. But Dexter… he’s different. While he says he’s serving justice, it’s clear his reasons are much more complicated. He’s not a typical hero at all; he’s more of a troubled figure who deals with his own demons by targeting other bad guys. It’s a really interesting, and often disturbing, dynamic.

Kay Scarpetta views the human body as a source of vital clues for solving crimes and stopping future violence. In stark contrast, Dexter Morgan considers his victims simply as targets for his killings, disposing of them at sea.

If the worlds of Scarpetta and Dexter collided, it would create a captivating dynamic. Dexter would meticulously cover his tracks, while Scarpetta, with her exceptional investigative skills, would relentlessly pursue the truth, uncovering his crimes and his true identity.

How Good Is Prime Video’s Scarpetta Compared To Dexter?

When Dexter first came out in 2006, critics loved it. While the show’s quality dipped in later seasons, the earlier episodes are still considered some of the best in the crime thriller genre. Scarpetta, however, hasn’t received quite the same enthusiastic response.

Despite criticisms about the actors and a confusing plot, the film is consistently praised for being incredibly engaging and holding viewers’ attention.

Compared to Dexter, Scarpetta is a much more serious show. Dexter often used dark humor, even during intense moments, while Scarpetta is a slow-paced, complex crime thriller that focuses on creating a strong mood and exploring family relationships.

As a big fan of crime dramas, I found Scarpetta really interesting because, unlike Dexter, it doesn’t focus on hunting one main villain each season. Instead, it juggles three different timelines all at once. What really sets it apart, though, is how it uses AI as part of the story – it’s a much more complex approach to crime and investigation than what Dexter usually did.

Because of the significant differences between Dexter and Scarpetta on Prime Video, it’s not really accurate to say one is a substitute for the other. However, Scarpetta is still an enjoyable crime thriller that fans of shows like Dexter will probably like.
