Prime Video’s Record-Breaking Action Series Is About To Settle A Major Streaming Rivalry

Since its debut in 2022, Reacher has made a big splash in the world of streaming, living up to the strength and stature of its main character. The show has received excellent reviews, particularly for its first and third seasons. Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Reacher has proven incredibly popular, with season 3 becoming Prime Video’s most-watched returning series and season 2 becoming the platform’s top show in 2023.

Even with its huge success, the Reacher series hasn’t surpassed its competition with Jack Ryan. The rivalry has always been friendly, but it’s hard to ignore the similarities: both shows are action thrillers on Prime Video, air around the same time, star characters with the same initials, and are based on popular books. It’s a natural comparison that fans enjoy.

Although it’s still debated who won ‘The Battle of the Jacks,’ the fourth season of Reacher might finally provide a definitive answer.

Why Reacher Season 4 Could Decide Prime Video’s “Battle Of The Jacks”

For the first three seasons, the Jack Reacher and Jack Ryan shows were very evenly matched. Both series started strong with great first seasons, then had slightly weaker second seasons. Fortunately, both Reacher and Jack Ryan improved again in their third seasons, arguably delivering their best seasons yet. This consistent back-and-forth is why it’s been so hard to decide which show is better.

Season 4 of Jack Ryan was the show’s weakest point. With fewer episodes and a complicated plot, the ending felt messy and didn’t deliver for viewers. Compared to the first three seasons, season 4 felt predictable and lacked the excitement and emotional depth that had previously made up for the show’s shortcomings.

If season 4 of Reacher is as good as the previous season, which focused on Jack Reacher’s revenge against Xavier Quinn, it will be in a much better position than Jack Ryan. It could then boast four consistently excellent seasons.

Now it’ll be up to Jack Ryan, with John Krasinski set to reprise his role in a new movie. However, even if that movie is a success, it’s unlikely to surpass the four excellent seasons of Reacher.

Reacher Season 4 Has Two Advantages Over Jack Ryan Season 4 (But There’s A Catch)

The fourth season of Jack Ryan had the difficult task of wrapping up the story, which contributed to a disappointing ending. While it’s too soon to confirm a fifth season of Reacher, there’s nothing to suggest Alan Ritchson will stop playing the character. Considering how many people watched the series, it’s highly probable that Reacher will be renewed for another season.

Another key strength of Reacher is how closely it sticks to the original books. While Jack Ryan used Tom Clancy’s novels as a general foundation, it didn’t directly adapt any specific storylines. Reacher, however, dedicates each season to a single book by Lee Child, with season four based on his 2009 novel, Gone Tomorrow.

This sets up season 4 of Reacher with a solid story already in place. Adapting a well-loved book for television is much safer than creating an entirely new plot.

Here’s the thing – the Neagley spin-off is a bit of a gamble. Jack Ryan never really dabbled in separate series, so the main focus always stayed with his story. It’s unclear how, or even if, Neagley will connect back to the original Reacher series, but I’m a little worried. If this means we see less of Maria Sten in season four, that would be a real shame. She’s been such a solid, grounding presence throughout the show, and reducing her role would definitely be a step back.
