Prime Video’s Scarpetta fills a similar niche to the popular series Reacher, but it’s made one key error that Reacher avoided. Reacher, based on Lee Child’s bestselling novels, could potentially run for many seasons, following the adventures of a large, former military police officer as he investigates crimes throughout the United States.
With 30 books already written, the Reacher series offers plenty of stories for the show to adapt in future seasons. But Reacher isn’t the only long-running book series getting the TV treatment. Prime Video is also preparing a thriller called Scarpetta, based on the popular novels by Patricia Cornwell, and bringing her famous character to the screen for the very first time.
Scarpetta Has Cast An A-List Star Rather Than An Up-And-Coming Actor
The Scarpetta book series is extensive, with 29 novels published over several decades and more still being written. If the new Scarpetta show on Prime Video is successful, it could run for as long as the popular Reacher series. Early signs are promising, as the first episode is directed by David Gordon Green, who also directed the 2018 Halloween movie.
The new show, Scarpetta, boasts a well-known cast including Nicole Kidman, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ariana DeBose, with appearances by Simon Baker (from The Mentalist) and Tiya Sircar (The Good Place). While these big names might attract an audience, they could unintentionally make it harder for Scarpetta to fill the shoes of the popular series Reacher.
Choosing Alan Ritchson for the role of Reacher was a smart move, as he was more willing to commit to several seasons of the show. His continued involvement – both in the upcoming Neagley series and season 4 of Reacher, even with other film projects – clearly demonstrates his dedication to the franchise.
Unlike some of her colleagues, Nicole Kidman’s busy schedule makes a long-term commitment to the show unlikely. She’s recently starred in big films like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Northman, and critically acclaimed dramas such as Babygirl. With Practical Magic 2 already planned, Scarpetta might not be a priority for her.
Could Scarpetta Continue Without Nicole Kidman?
Bringing Nicole Kidman back for another season of Scarpetta would be significantly more expensive than keeping Alan Ritchson as Reacher. Because of this, the show might have to find a way to continue the story without Kidman, potentially by finding a new actress to play Scarpetta or by making the younger actress who portrayed her in season one the new main character.
The first season of Scarpetta mainly centers on Nicole Kidman’s portrayal of the older Dr. Scarpetta and her complicated family life. Though Rosy McEwen, a promising new actress, is expected to return in future seasons, it’s crucial that the show doesn’t abandon the established older characters. Otherwise, all the character development from season one would be pointless.
It’s difficult to picture the future of the Scarpetta series centering solely on a younger version of the character, but it’s also unlikely Nicole Kidman will stay with the show for many seasons. It will be interesting to see how the series evolves as Scarpetta tries to become a successful competitor to Reacher.
